Not the same demographic and genre. Haruhi trumped all the school anime in 2006, Shana's rival was Louise and Saito. ZnT and SnS had a good rivalry going for a time.
No, SAO has sustained a more consistent quality and tone whereas Shana went full fucking retard in the final season, probably because the production was cheaper.
Not to mention, SAO is a more strict battle shounen whereas Shana had significant SoL elements for a long time. Actually, they're not very alike at all.

The animu skipped all of MC's inner conversations with Aizen during the course of events which explained why he joined the badguys and fought against the Flame Haze. It didn't help half of s2 was SoL filler.
anyway Yuuji Snake was gonna make everything daijoubou by creating an alternate dimension for the hollows to live in where they wouldn't constantly be attacking humanity, but the Flame Haze were defined BY the grudges most of them held so they wouldn't accept the coexistence solution.

Shakugan no Shana was great. When I saw they were actually going to animate the ending I was very pleased that I'd actually be able to see it. I didn't think there was any hope of the LNs being translated and assumed I'd be in eternal cliffhanger. I liked how Yuuji didn't blindly follow the "good" and thought about things himself. The man set out his goal, switched sides, worked towards it, accomplished it, and prepared to accept his punishment for his selfishness. The only reason there was a happy ending at all was because Shana was like WE HAPPY END NOW YUUJI
I mean it was a bit rushed, but at least I got to see it. I'd still really like to read the whole LN series someday.
