Kyoani is like that hot girl at the club. She sure is good looking, and so you can't help approaching here and trying to strike up conversation, but once you do, you realise there's nothing of substance to her. She's completely dull and boring, having relied solely on her looks all her life, never having to offer anything more than a pretty face.

To answer your question OP, the show gets shit on because it tries to court too many viewer bases. On one had, you have really interesting thought experiments on things like object permanence and subjective reality, then you have... um... telephone limbo games with more jiggle-physics than Gainax could have ever dared to dream about.
If it was just cute chuuni kids doing cute chuuni things in their after school club, it would have gotten the same reception as other KyoAni shows that came before it. As it stands, it's trying to present entry level philosophy while also cramming fanservice in at every opportunity. It doesn't mix well.
Also, not having a strong over-arching narrative basically drops this down to the level of 'after school monster-of-the-week shounen battle' anime.
It's a fun show, but its not a 'good' show.
