Tsukihime has less supplementary material to buff it up, and it's debatable how much of stuff that happens in Melty Blood can be taken seriously.
Fewer characters, and those characters are not as exciting. The most interesting characters (some of the members of the Dead Ancestor Apostles, Aoko, Altrouge, etc.) are getting screwed for face time too.
Also it's harder to snag people with this because it's got no anime to catch the attention of the lay person, where Fate has no less than four separate attempts at adaptation in addition to two updated re-releases of it's original material.
An adaptation of the Tsukihime manga would be amazing. I sincerely hope to see this one day.

Tsukihime was actually quite popular, but its the difference between a first, still somewhat underground hit, and a now established author hitting it big.
Had they been released in the opposite order Tsukihime would be the famous one.
Because as much of a hack Nasu is, he came up with a pretty cool and novel idea for Fate.

Not entirely. Tsukihime had a lot of interesting ideas and stuff introduced in the many versions of Melty Blood that came out over the years. The problem is that Tsukihime itself is mostly a very self contained stories and the characters are very much within that self contained story. While the Fate characters are more ambitious and looking forward to things in the future, as well as spreading their wings in the wider world.
Whereas you could get one solid action with Shiki, as long as it had to with with helping Arc post story or fighting something, that's about it since he wants to live a mundane life. Akiha isn't exactly going to go out looking for shit and will just head the family. Ciel like Shiki could have one good actiony plot, but you need an initiator. Arc needs to either be cured or sealed. Kohaku and Hisui have no real interests except living peacefully.
Compared to other characters in Fate who have bright or ambitious futures to look forward to. Shirou finding his purpose and actively helping people, Rin not only heading her family as the sixth head, but traveling and in some ends, working as a disciple of Zel. Sakura ends up getting a cool mentor who is a badass priest himself, and rebuilding her life, which opens up a lot of things.
So Tsukihime has a limited scope unless they rely on Melty forever, which will end up suffering from fighting game plot syndrome like BlazBlue or Guilty Gear and become all kinds of convoluted.
Fate has interesting plotlines outside they can use, and unlimited ways to work the characters in that are believable, that is why it has become Nasu's Gundam, not that Tsukihime is bad.
It's like if you compared Kojima's Zone of the Enders to Metal Gear.

TM is about as expansive as Index. They don't NEED new characters, Nasu just needs to actually use more of the ones he has in fully fleshed out stories and settings.

What makes Tsukihime better than FSN is the atsmosphere, you can feel the danger , the drama, the mindfuck.The music does a better job to add to the atmosphere than FSN.The characters interactions are so superior to the character interactions of FSN that it hurts,and the slice of life segments and Shirou's Pov are fucking annoying.FSN plot is too forced at times, some times they lead to plot holes,weak plot or unexplainable developments.Tsukihime's plot flows better, it's simple and credible.
Tsukihime's plot is also more mature, each resolution have more weight to them 1) Arc and Shiki didn't end up in good terms in Ciel's True End, 2) After every single of the Far Side of the Moon routes, Arc and Ciel will keep hunting Roa, 3) Akiha ends up as a doll in one ending, 4) Akiha and Kohaku die in another end, 5) Hisui's Good End wasn't precisely happy. In F/sn, only 2 characters couldn't be saved: 1) Ilya in UBW, 2) Saber and Ilya in HF.
Shirou never actually shows his resolve when it comes to deal with people who are prepared to kill,and the story does not have serious and mature Masters - aside from Zōken-and the only time Shirou had to confront one of his friends, was in HF against Black Saber. Shiki, on the other hand, had to fight Arc, Ciel, Akiha, and Satsuki at some point - there's also the point when he realises all what Kohaku has been doing.
FSN is just too light and aimed at teenagers. That why the dark and cold as ice Tsukihime is superior.

Type Moon just always holds a huge April Fools event each year. Its always the biggest thing they do each year, and it involves a lot of people and new content happening.
Last year they had twenty or thirty Fate characters playing the roles of the characters on twitter and posting all day for twenty-four hours. The people who were playing the roles were the various writers or VAs for the franchise.
The entire thing had a huge overarching plot with a lot of twists and oddities. Not only did they do that, but they did four other things in the same day and a few vids.
No one knows what TM is planning until it happens. They always do something different each time.
