I enjoyed it. As with all ghibli stuff it is very pretty to look at. Pacing was weird and plot was a little heavy handed with the war allegory.

I enjoyed it a lot when I watched it for the first time, but then I read the book.
There isn't much left of the original story and half the cast is missing.
But the animation is still nice.
Pretty. A slightly weak work perhaps compared to anything else from Ghibli save for Earthsea but a good movie overall.
It is to anime what A.I. was to Hollywood. A half finished film that was almost scrapped. Then Miyazaki took over to try and save it. And you can tell which parts Miyazaki directed and which parts the original director did.

Thinking a bit more about the movie now I take that back. It's weaker compared to Miyazaki's other works.
I'll still place it higher than Arrietty, The Cat Returns, From Up on Poppy Hill and Ocean Waves, because even if Howl isn't as solid a film as Miyazaki's others and Takahata's films it's still a joy to watch simply because how great it looks.

Saw the film when it was released, the book wasn't translated until like a year later.
I couldn't back then read english well enough to go through entire novels.
I feel like reading it again. It's so different and all the details have slipped my mind. I don't even remember whether I liked it or not.

Watched it for the first time during the week.
