this definitely wasn't horror (more SOL/coming of age) but it definitely had a very disturbing and eerie atmosphere. it's one of the few things i've watched that actually made me legitimately creeped out.a lot of the spookiness comes from the rotoscoping and what the fuck was up with that one girl with pigtails that totally had a man's face

I thought Madoka was great at psychological horror. It started uncanny and only got worse. I actually felt relieved when I finished it.

Shiki started out with some good, creepy moments that even gave me goosebumps but the more I understood what was happening the less creepy it got. Once the unknown becomes known, they just turn into generic villains.

I could say Alien 9 was disturbing but the rape metaphor in this anime is completely unwelcome and unrealistic, and the MC is more insufferable than Shinji.
Serial Experiments Lain made me feel uncomfortable.
Also shin sekai yori ended up doing horror when everything went to hell towards the end
