Not really. He takes forever to level up and the big fights are fought by other people. Plus there are other protags the story focuses on just as much if not more.
I found his reaction to Kite's death too melodramatic in the anime but it made sense in the manga.

I started with the anime and read the manga from the beginning and only have about 20 or so left. All I can say is that it's sad to know I'll soon finish with such an amazing series. It was such a wild ride and I might reread it again once I reach the finish.
