While there's no real downside, I don't see them going in that direction. Not only would that just distance themselves from Beerus and Whis, but they already established that the way to change planets would be to make a wish using the super dragon balls. It'd be a major waste to make that the first wish using them, plus the only ones who would have incentive to continue looking for the super dragon balls would be Champa and Vados while Goku and the rest have no reason to help Champa to make his wish.

GT is half DB like and half DBZ like, but taking the aspects that separate those and potentiating them. It's very edgy, but anyone who likes it most definitely likes it because of nostalgia.
DBS is more laid back than Z, and the plots are much less serious. I think it's really fun but don't expect DBZ, much less Faulcner DBZ. If you liked DB beyond the fights I'd recommend it.

I can actually predict the outcome of all the fights.
Piccolo will defeat Frost, then lose to the U6 Saiyan, then Vegeta will beat that guy and lose to Hit. Finally Monaca will fight Hit, the battle will end in a tie, with both being knocked out. This will leave the Robot with no one to fight, at this point Gohan will be called in to fight the final contestant, the Robot. Gohan will win but afterwards the true antagonist of this arc will appear (or emerge) and the tournament will be rendered irrelevant and it will become about the fighters of both universes fighting this one bad guy who's ridiculously powerful.
Did everyone REALLY think that the major conflict of this arc was going to be this stupid tournament? The tournament is just the beginning, just a way to introduce the new characters and show what they're capable of before getting to the real antagonist and the meat of the arc.
