But this... just takes the crown without effort.
It's a good way to gauge a fanbase, but a shitty show can involve themes worth discussing and even bring them to light in a more blunt manner, potentially facilitating discussion of the themes rather than how shit their inclusion in the story was, and so on for interesting characters, noteworthy plot development, etc

I think here, the kind of anime a person watches and discusses is /a/'s version of "what kind of car/home you own" IRL.
We feel pride when we watch anime of the highest quality, and discuss it with others because their good taste is simply a reflection of ours (praising people who are like us is an acceptable way of praising ourselves). Likewise, we shitpost shitty ones to prove to others that "we have good taste, and we're proving it by shitposting this title."
It's, more or less, establishing ourselves on the social hierarchy of nerds.
