Traditional values. A samurai was expected to go off to war for profit and honor, and his wife was expected to run his house or castle, and see to it's defense while he was gone. So something like this is merely seen as an old fashioned ideal. The first and second arcs are acceptable, despite a severe lack of character development that the VN had, it really starts getting down hill later when they start introducing more plot elements and meta world characters. It worked in the VN because it could pace itself out better, but episodes 3 and 4 really rely on the pre-established character development, as well as having enough time to flesh out the new elements they're introducing. It becomes hard to follow in the anime, especially during the fourth arc. Over all it should have been better paced out, and trying to do all first four arcs within 24 episodes was a fool's idea from the start. Couldn't do the same thing they did with Higurashi with Umineko.

In the end, Umineko isn't very well suited to be adapted into anime simply because there's way too much content to adapt, and most of it is strictly limited to VN format. There's no way you can make a 20-something episodes Umineko anime without cutting off a lot of shit, and nowadays is very rare to see a anime beyond that episode count.
Mostly, I'd better go downright into the heart of the matter and make it less about solving murders with hints and rules, and more about the Ushiromiya family drama (which is also a very important part of the story, if not the real story behind the murders) which is far more simple to understand, and solves the whole characterization problem the anime has.
