A lot of times this is used as a defense for shitty anime/manga. i.e. SAO is only hated on this board cause is poplar!!!1!
If you've been on this board for long enough though you can tell this has an effect on even good anime or at least anime that shouldn't be considered terrible.
Take TTGL for example. While not the best anime ever, it was loved by /a/ but, in recent days it gets panned a lot. This is due to not only people realizing its flaws overtime but also the fact that it is a very popular anime on the reddits and other sites.

It happens in the middle of a chapter in the manga.Satoru blabs about the stuff they found to his teacher, who is actually the killer, who then straps him in a car and drives it into a river leading him to fall into a 15 year coma only to wake up with amnesia that dates back to before his first revival. Forgetting the revivals and his adult life in the process. The manga then proceeds to spend 8 chapters or so teasing us with his memories then the series suddenly ends. My point is that I want to see all that happening. I want him to become a successful mangaka since pursuing your dreams was an important theme (introduced in the first chapter and revisited in chapter 35 when Airi talks about her own dream of becoming a photographer). I also want him to meet Airi again because they shared a lot and I don't think Satoru should give up that relationship. Even if he has to build it from zero again, he should go for it.
I want to see all this because I think it's important for his character growth and because he actually deserves it.
That been said, I don't think the manga would go to shit of this doesn't happen. I just think it would be better if it does.
