More so with Katanagatari than Monogatari.

Katanagatari feels like an anime Tarantino would make. Especially with the double length episodes packed to the brim with too much dialogue.

It doesn't really have any deep themes, and the series often uses very clumsy or drawn-out metaphors.

they may not be revolutionary, but they're there. Hana talks about life-statis due to fear of making decisions and how to deal with your life issues in general, owari and how happiness is your responsibility etc. There are actually quite of few meaningful take aways from a lot of arcs, I think.

Tarantino dialog is top tier though. Monogatari isn't.

If I were to compare Tarantino with any studio I'd do it with Gainax since both fall short when it comes to endings. Tarantino with the cookie cutter gun fights and Madhouse with the cookie cutter mindfucks that don't even make sense.

But that's the point, it has rounded characters that illustrate its themes by their different viewpoints and how they affect each other. It is certainly enjoyable on more superficial levels but that's the sign of well made shows.

And the dialogue is at very stilted, but also witty and carrying a lot of subtext.

But if you want a ten word description: Teenage girl in love triangle between vampire and furry humanoid.

>>
>>137830507

I'm not that anon, but "dealing with the inability to make decisions" or more accurately, the angst that comes from the realization of radical freedom, is a classic core theme of Existentialist philosophy, (Kierkegaard, Sartre, et all) while National Honor is not. Existentialism in general is far more focused on individual, personal, internal conflicts, the difficulties of being, thinking and existing as a person alone in the world, not with large scale, societal, communal issues like nationalism.

>>
>>137825185
I don't want to sound pretentious (I still will), but I think some people legit don't get it and they just focus on the fanservice and shaft doing weird things to save budget, that's why they think it's nothing more than a glorified harem, when it truly has some good themes and messages in every arc.
>>

The harem elements are really unimportant in Second Season and onward. There are other male characters, though only one of them could be considered a 'romantic rival' and he is only present for one arc (the most recent one).

Because I found it interesting, and was naive enough to believe that academia could be a worthwhile pursuit career-wise.

After graduating I was forced to face reality. I salvaged things to the best of my ability by going to law school. It's often said that philosophy students score higher on the LSATs and do better in law school than pre-law students, because philosophy teaches critical thinking and writing better. Not sure if that's true or not, but I know being a lawyer is the only way to use a Philosophy degree to make any real money, so here I am.

I would never call Monogatari pretentious.

Something like Eva could be called pretentious. Where there is a hint that there is some great deep meaning behind it, but it's never properly explained for various reasons.
Monogatari doesn't ever pretend that it has some deep meaning to tell. It's really clever and witty, but not for any purpose other than to be an interesting work of fiction. It's not like it requires effort to see the real meaning behind it, there isn't any meaning to see. It's just a fun series that takes a little bit of mental effort to keep up with and enjoy. Unlike the people who call it pretentious, some people actually enjoy this kind of thing.

Actual character development, cute girls, interesting direction, not for everyone.

I think it's a really good series that's often misinterpreted by people who don't give it a real chance. It's also legit not for everyone, and I can understand if it doesn't appeal to some people. However, I'm going to disregard anyone who says "pretentious" or think it just boils down to fanservice and doesn't have any substance beyond that. Lots of shows nowadays are obnoxiously self-aware, with characters talking about anime tropes. Deconstruction has become a meme word, but if I had to say how Monogatari is more a deconstruction than all these other harem shows, I'd say it's because it suggests how certain personality types might actually develop and how life would suck for someone with that personality. Apart from that, the fourth-wall shit can't even be considered an attempt to deconstruct anything.

I think it's time to stop saying the exact same two things in slightly different ways, faggots.

>monogatari feels like the second to me
I agree, but I think it can largely get away with it. It's a fine balance and I think Monogatari does it well.

Slightly off topic, but it reminds me of the deadpool movie. It was a subversion of superhero movies but still ended up following the exact same formula anyway. Seems the same with Monogatari and harem.

Definitely the case for Bake, but I wouldn't say Monogatari follows the harem formula after Bake/Nise.

> deconstructions that try to have its cake and eat it too,
Then they are not deconstructions, are they?
They might lean on the fourth wall and hang some lampshades but that's not a part of the deconstruction itself rather as >>137839526 puts it because >it suggests how certain personality types might actually develop and how life would suck for someone with that personality.
You've got to remember that this is work is for entertainment and if it took itself seriously all the time viewers and readers might lose interest. Part of the appeal in monogatari is that Nisio and SHAFT blended it all together so that it was still entertaining to watch. Also if deconstruction itself is going to attract those watch a lot from that genre and those fans are self-aware to some extent but still enjoy it regardless. Just look at battle-harem fags complaining how shit the next one is going to be, but they'll still watch it anyway.
Also off topic but that idiom its genuinely useless.
No-one keeps cakes for the primary purpose of "not eating it"
You can't have it both ways works better because it equally values both options whereas the cake suggest no actually just fuck the cake.

I hate use the word "deconstruction" after it has been so thoroughly ran into the ground, but I can't really think of a more fitting description for Monogatari. I guess you could also say it parodies the harem genre, but I'm not sure if it's all that accurate given how often humour is not involved. I'm going to make a weird comparison here. I think Monogatari is like the movie Hot Fuzz, in that it parodies buddy cop movies while being a damn fine buddy cop movie itself, and aside from the comedy a major draw of the film is the exact same elements that make buddy cop movies popular. In the same way, Monogatari is a "deconstruction" of harem, even though there are people who probably are largely drawn to it by the harem elements.

I'm not exactly a professional critic so it's possible that there's a more applicable term for this (I hope so), but there's my thoughts anyway.

It's a bit off topic but I keep coming across it, "Whatever you parody will inevitable become half of your fanbase"
