I'm a few episodes in and it isn't really the comedy you guys made it out to be.

Alot better IMO, i struggled through the først season, droppes the series 3-4 times. Don't know why i startet with it again and again.
First they tell you it's 20 episodes, then 30, then 40, but I can't really say I noticed any big difference in quality.
I'm 81 episodes in and it's getting pretty good.
So far I'd give it a 7 or 8/10.
But all these fucking obscure cultural references just won't quit.
Some of them seriously make Joshiraku look entry level.

Anyway if you don't want to waste your time and you're not sure if you want to keep watching, just skip to the current season or the second one, and start watching from there if you want to see some great comedy.
Yeah, you'll miss out on some character interactions, but it's still better than dropping it altogether.
And if it does spark your interest, you can go back and watch the less interesting episodes.

Keep watching. Gintama is a show that only gradually fleshes out the plot and the huge cast of side-characters. I'm at season 4 and pretty much all the characters introduced in season 1 are still interesting and being expanded upon (except maybe foureyes). Give it some time to grow on you and you won't be disappointed.

The first pure comedy episode is like, Nabe Shogun or so, but they become more interspersed as the show goes on
First 20 episodes are the weakest and generally for introduction purposes but I still enjoyed them.
Episodes 25-160 are the true GOAT Gintama episodes. Sorta goes downhill from there.

Generally I recommend episode 25. It has a very different style of humor from the previous ones. If you didn't like the show from the start and also don't enjoy 25, then it likely won't be for you.
The only addition later to the humor are more dirty jokes and more blatant reference stuff.

I was with you, i wasn't really feeling the show at all so i skipped around to different arcs, i started with the courtesan of the nation arc, and that was really really enjoyable so i went back to the benizakura arc which was meh, didn't get why people said it was the best, then i skipped back around through the 200+ episodes and I eventually developed a taste for the comedy and went back and watched it for real.
Gintama is kind of like coffee, it tastes like shit the first few times, but eventually you get conditioned to it and it's suddenly the most important thing in your life.

The 'obscure political and pop culture references' don't make up 90% of the jokes and the show is perfectly watchable without knowing about them; the target audience probably doesn't even know about all that shit. On the other hand, there's entire episodes made to parody Gundam, Death Note and Kaiji.

Nabe Shogun episode is good because was released much later on in the manga, even though it's only episode 25. The episodes before and after are back to the usual sub-par quality. It takes until like episode 40ish or something for Gintama to get good.

If you don't get into it after 15 episodes you never will. Actually you don't even need to watch that many episodes as it's basically always the same formula and type of comedy. If you don't like the main trio, better drop it. If you only like the other characters, either suffer through the rest or drop it.
I've seen 75 episodes, the first movie, and most OVAs... and out of these only 3-4 episodes were good and the very first Jump OVA (whacking helmets one).
Gintama is just not my thing. I don't like the comedy now, I wouldn't have as a child or teen. I could never stand it when people scream all the time.
I only watched this far for two reasons: I never drop stuff and try to complete everything (even if I stall it for years lol) and I wanted to see the eyepatch girl (though I lost interest again just before that arc starts o.o).
IMO the Benizakura-hen was disappointing and weak. Too much pointless drama, annoying side characters of the week, annoying music, "coolness", stupid ending battle. At least that eyepatch dude and his crew show promise. As much as I rant about this arc, there were some things I liked^^
Gintama is basically hit and miss for me. Sometimes I absolutely can't stand it. Other times the episodes are quite enjoyable.
The serious episodes are mostly crap IMO because of the melodrama. The wacky episodes are either too wacky and childish or they can be ok to rarely good.
Katsura and the Shinsengumi episodes are almost always great, some other side characters are good. The main trio is crap, sadly... Gintoki is boring and can be annoying (though sometimes he's cool), Kagura is actually fine and funny even though she's retarded and has a speech impediment. My main problem is Shinpachi: he screams way too much, he's an idiot, weak, useless, whiny, tsukkomi, and I despise his seiyuu.
My fav. episode is the one where the crew, Katsura and others invade some mansion. For some reason that one made me laugh a lot (don't remember much anymore)

Discard this opinion, I like Zura and the Shinsengumi more than the main trio and I've seen every episode and movie there is.
It's totally worth to watch the whole thing since Gintama doesn't have a classic main character like other anime.

Even if one understands the cultural references, it doesn't necessarily make the anime funnier. To me references are a nice bonus, but they shouldn't define the core of a comedy anime.
IMO Joshiraku had a lot more cultural references, political stuff etc. and the anime was funny even if you didn't get a fair amount of references.
Seitokai no Ichizon (first season only) had tons of anime references and it was hilarious. Back then I didn't understand most of it, but it was still funny. Were I to rewatch it now I'd understand most of it, but I might not laugh as much as before.
In the end how you perceive humor and comedy differs from person to person. One can laugh at people getting slapped in the face repeatedly, another laughs at pop culture or gender jokes... yet another laughs when people get blown up or mutilated

I didn't say that it's never worth watching regardless of liking only certain characters. What I meant is that IMO most episodes feature the main trio more than other characters = chances are higher that I won't enjoy these episodes = more "bad" episodes than "good" ones = "not worth it".
Think about it... most normal people don't have that much time to watch anime and they don't want to waste it on stuff they don't like. OP isn't really enjoying Gintama so far. Assuming he has limited time, he'd better drop it. If he's a NEET, who can waste his time then why not continue watching Gintama?

That may be true, but it's not a reason to continue watching something just because characters are unique or different.
50 is when if reaches its stride. 25 roughly us when it starts to have some actually funny things.

This. Its all the same shitty show. Just read the responses of the people here, everyone will tell you how they struggled through the show in one way or another and then it finally "clicked" when in reality they just forced themselves to like it after investing so much time into it
Instead of wasting your time with 300 episodes of Gintama you could watch a million other shorter and better shows.
Not every Gintama episode is good, but this is the only anime in existence that made me actually giggle.

And I'm saying that's wrong because most episodes may involve Gintoki, Kagura and Shinpachi but they most likely enjoy the rest of the cast aswell, not ONLY the main trio. And this is where Gintama is interesting when you don't even like the main trio as much.

No one told OP to watch every episode of Gintama in a week or two. And it's kind of ironic to give a newcomer like OP advice if you yourself are at only 75 episodes, since you don't have any clue how the series evolve up to this weeks episode. Maybe you should watch more episodes of Gintama before recommending to drop a series of which you haven't seen much yourself yet.

It tooks me like a year to watch every episodes of Gintama (with stops every now and then). The first 20ish episodes aren't really great but it is actually a good comedy anime, no doubt about it. My favorite arcs are popularity and monkey hunter one. Right now things are getting more "dark", not sure if I like it. I mean, it's quite a good thing that there's a "main story" (after 300 episodes or so) to develop, but i'm starting to miss the jokes and the funny moments, altough the photo of the beated shogun done by sasaki made me laugh more than it should.

But dark arcs are the fastest ones too. Is kinda annoying reading them on the manga because a weekly chapter of a serious arc mostly involve unfinished fights chapter after chapter. While on the anime it happens pretty fast. Also, Gintama's fights are pretty cool.
