I always thought it was excessive smoking. I can't think of a mangaka aside from Araki who doesn't smoke. Pic related is three packs a day since high school.

I'm just saying thay if you're in the buisness of writing fiction then writing books might be a better idea. There was a chart floating around of a mangaka's work schedule and it was insane.

Don't most westerners usually focus more on the art side of manga? There are a few who became assistants for some already established ones. Leave the story telling to the nips.

I'm not really sure about that but i know there's no major western manga. It's mostly american super hero comic books that we can do without being ridiculed. Which sucks because american comic book heroes is pretty much dead normie trash now with 0 innovation.

Most manga stories have become stagnant and cliche as well i believe. I think they're generally running out of creativity and talent in the story and lore department.

Poor your heart and soul into the story/art only to have the publishing magazine give you a short deadline to wrap everything up. This in turn will result is a rushed ending that leaves a sour taste for your fans and makes you extremely bitter about realities of the manga industry.

For starters, according to many Americans, you can't be white, because they'll never accept you as a mangaka ever.

>>137795024
isn't that a bad example? the manga adaption for that was made by a japanese person in japan, for japanese people. i don't think that shit is even getting released outside japan.

>>
for the comics I read. I think what japanese artists have that the west struggle with is the ability to take a relatively mundane activity (gardening, playing a sport or game, being in a club, hobbies, etc.) and makes that subject interesting to read a story about without always having to pull out a genre trope in it. The author really pinpoints his or her interest and crafts a story that's character driven, informative (not necessarily educational) and still accessible to people who didn't have a clue about the subject going in.

Eyeshield 21 is my favorite example. It has surrealist aspects but they're used to show the intensity and strategy being played out on a football field. Compare that to Chris Sims/Bowers/Kowalchuk's Down Set Fight! We uses Football as a backdrop to a revenge/action story about punching mascots.

I wish there was some sort of English comic that didn't rely on the 2 cool 4 u crowd to get the ball rolling. I've tried to give SAGA a try since a few people recommended it but it has that shit that I hate in western media where every important character was a sarcastic piece of shit and/or psycho and thus I could barely get through the first few chapters. I'm probably biased though I don't really like actions stuff.
