That's the biggest problem with this series. It's a pure shonen series, but instead of a unrealistic fighting series where the author could create whatever power level or nakama shit and readers could do nothing but accept since it's his imaginary world after all, it's about a card game which is exist in real life with establish, clear strict rule. The anime world is a bit different. They go heavy on the romanticism. The fact is, that ideally a card game or any game really would have room for you to play with your favorites and win assuming you had a decent strategy. The reality is that because they need to shill cards that doesn't happen and there's clear distinctions in power between decks and you can't take shit cards and support them to be good.
In anime world though they aren't shilling cards for other people to buy. We only run into like one, maybe two, other people that have Dark Magicians. Blue Eyes only has 4 copies ever printed. In later series, people apparently just magically create and obtain more archetype support for whatever deck they're running. None of the actual deck building rules apply in a world like that.
It's like if someone was running E-Drags, someone else would just magically, mystically, create archetype support for their deck that totally shut them out. So while I do get your frustration the whole world of the anime just happens to work off of a different "meta" if you will.

I was always a fan of the TCG and still am to this day, so recently I've actually taken it upon myself to watch the anime.
Joey is by far the best character, he really grows as a character and a duelist and his duels are always the most fun to watch, it's great to see how well he does even when lacking the rare card privilege Kaiba and Yugi seem to boast.
though it's a shame even after all his accomplishments he is still treated like shit by his peers.
