Just finished this and it is by far the most enjoyable shounen I have ever watched. Maybe because it didn't go on forever, all the characters were likable and the romance was well thought out? You have to admit, it is the best thing to come out of Shounen Jump.

I thought the anime fell apart right when the big bad showed up. Bascially, it went from a show where people died when they were killed to an average shonen where fucking nothing happened and nobody died real quick.

He was in the middle of that weird Frankenstein comic before he put it on hiatus to do some Kenshin AU last I knew, but that must have been years ago.
I do often feel a bit bad for Watsuki, that none of his other works were able to gain quite the same popularity and Kenshin ends up just hanging over it all. But Busou Renkin made ten volumes in the end and he got to properly wrap it up. The Frakenstein one seemed to be doing well enough to keep going. And Kenshin made fucking gangbusters for awhile, so I'm sure he's fine.

Series like Busou Renkin are good examples of why cliched stories and characters aren't necessarily bad, it's how well they're executed. BR toys with things a bit, but it's pretty much entirely straight the whole way through. It's just enjoyable, the art and characters good, and there's pretty much nothing you have to make excuses for. There's no little annoyances or stupid shit where you have to shrug and say "well it's battle shonen shit, what are you going to do?" Just good fun.
