It was better than the dumbass tournament that should have been one or two volumes tops. Last order was 19 fucking volumes and the tournament started on volume 5. Even discounting the two vampire volumes that's 12 volumes of the tournament. The original Gunnm was 9 volumes in total. Zott should have been a side distraction like rollerball.

I fucking love this comic. It's got a great sense of progression. In chapter 1, it really feels like the junk heap is the entire world.
Then eventually we get into magic kung-fu space vampires, but none of it feels like a huge leap.

I think I stopped reading after vampire woman's back story. It was cool and all, but I totally lost interest in what was happening with Alita. I don't even remember any of the other characters.
I'm remember watching the first OVA when I was a kid, and it traumatized me. Several years later, I peeked into the first volume and hated how gruesome and dark this Manga is.
