So in the end it's basically a story about how Kiki continued forging swords even beyond the grave, and disposed of the shogunate for some reason too.

Its been a while since I watched it, but if I remember, it mostly has to do with Kiki's personal view on how things should play in out. The path he best thinks will lead Japan to prosperity. However, like Shichika and Hitei-hime say at the end, the people in the future have the freedom to choose their own path. The very idea that history could be wrong is false since history is just a sum of choices and actions made by free willed individuals.

This show is held in high regard from what I've seen. It's good, sure, but it just gave me an awkward(?) feeling. It's like I felt unsatisfied. The characters were alright, but whole "sword of the month" premise really rushed things. I couldn't appreciate any of the characters as they only appeared for an episode or MAYBE two, and then they'd be gone. I was rused by Sabi's encounter, and I think the last episode was definitely the best, but I still feel like it wasn't something incredible like it's portrayed to be. Maybe I've paid too much attention to the vocal minority?
