I just finished Eureka Seven and fucking loved it, so I want to talk about it.

Give the manga a look, a lot of it is just an overly-condensed version of the anime but it does some different things to the main series. Also it's very short.
I remember hating the movie but I can't remember why.

Holland. What a fine man. But really E7 was the best part of my adolescent anime years. Soundtrack was good, too. I used to listen to Himitsu Kichi on loop every night before bed for several months.

The movie is good and worth watching but you might want to go into it with the right mindset. It's a completely different story told with the same characters, although their personalities are also changed. It's still Eureka Seven in a lot of ways, but it's neither a sequel nor a retelling.

I enjoyed re-watching some of the first half of E7. The Renton bullying is so much more tolerable with story context. And that constant "Coralian" business that wasn't explained until quite far along is nice to see unfold.

It's actually a worse show than it is a sequel.
Plot full of internal inconsistencies and anticlimaxes, an entire group of characters billed as mains having zero effect on the plot, plot reset button, hackneyed political angle, passable mech fights. Basically only the soundtrack was good.

if you are more liberal about what you consider to be canon, there is a very good E7 fanfiction series written by KEN-GOH, as a sequel to E7. After reading this series, i would think that, if the original writers has been brought back to work on the sequel, the story would have turned out something like this fanfiction. at the very least, it doesn't shit all over E7 like what AO did.

Well, it did have a bittersweet end. A lot of the downers are just more of the bad shit happening to actual main characters-even in the original, it was made clear that the majority of the major cities were getting obliterated by satellite chunks.
Eureka Seven is one of those shows that I sort of followed when I was a teen and came back to later, and I liked it a lot. After awhile and the amount of times I rewatched it, I ruined it for myself, or I finally realized a lot of the ''subtle'' undertones were actually very forced, and the show seemed to lose its balance when you knew its full formula.
Its a show id still recommend to people, and one I cant say I didnt enjoy, but its definitely one that you grow out of. That isn't really a bad thing, for a year or two.. I even had Eureka as a waifu, and that really did better me as person. My point being is im glad I didnt become one of those fans on tumblr that obsess over the show non stop.

The true menace of AO is that it tricked the viewer several times into thinking it was getting better, only to get even worse, with the the final time just plunging into a pit of shit. It was one of my all time favorites. The movie is worth watching, not amazing but decent. Sort of an alternate reality type deal. Never watched AO despite being such a big fan cause I heard terrible things and didn't want to ruin the franchise.
