Honestly, after watching some harem animes and whatnot, I would say that women complaining that some anime women are portrayed poorly are being whiny bitches. Men just as likely as not are portrayed as spineless vapid empty characters just as often.
Anime, more so than western media, will portray a female character as a baddass, as an independent person with interests outside the scope of boys, or as an individual with positive qualities outside of just beauty and youth.

Modern "Muh innocent waifu" designs of modern anime are shit, bring back the fucking babes of the 90s like Misato Katsuragi and Ayuko Hayami.
'Pandering' to fujos can only mean good things for the industry. I use the word pandering loosely, because it's not even necessary to get a fujo audience. Fujos have varied, flexible taste and literally ALL they want is male characters who interact, and preferably have an interesting dynamic- they don't need conventionally attractive character designs, they don't necessarily need fanservice and don't actually want canon homo, characters don't have to be pure and innocent or fit an archetype and can be openly attracted to girls, it can be a series flat out aimed at a male audience instead. It doesn't matter what the content of a series is, because will use their imagination in place of the series actually having to cater to them.
Osomatsu-san is a good example. The characters are flawed as all fuck and girls love them anyway, while men can also find them thoroughly entertaining because flaws make for good comedy. On the other hand, otaku would never in a million years spend money on the female equivalent of the Matsus.
