The story goes full chuuni.Phantoms take over the world and kill most of humanity, humans are forced into underground armored cities, MC blames himself for it due to the events at the end of the first novel being the cause for it (that's the reason he looks so thin unkempt and has longer hair) and typical chuuni stuff happens with him gaining powers of darkness; it has actual antagonists and everything instead of being episodic.

Kyoani was rich before them.
They failed because they probably just made a misculculation on how good the LN really was. The first episode was the best first episode of the season, and the show promised really interesting monsters with cool reasons for existing and methods of sealing. Then it just degenerated into every monster of the week trope ever, combined with okay-but-not-great girls, everyone wanting the Hauhiko dick for no real reason, and shelving the only interesting subplot; and they show just never really stood a chance, Kyoani or no.
