Nowadays, if the budget is there, shows are produced with 'two seasons' in mind, each being 12-13 episodes, whereas in the past it would have just been one 24-26 episode season. This is because it generally generates more hype, and if the show absolutely tanks for some reason, it can be killed off without producing the second half.
