Is the anime as good as the VN?
I played up until about halfway through the second episode of the VN and quit because it felt too predictable.
Later, I played through the Umineko VN and really enjoyed it, which made me want to try HIgurashi again. I head that the Umineko anime was shit, is the same true for Higurashi?

The Higurashi anime is more faithful than the Umineko anime, but that's still not saying much. But it does have a great soundtrack, I'll give it that.
There's also a manga version, but I haven't read all of it to properly judge it.
