Recently, Edge Of Tomorrow did very well but almost nobody knew it was based on AYNIK, do you think that it will be different for GitS (seeing as it has the original name)?

For a little while you'll have people claiming to be 'into GitS' who will have no idea what a Shirow is or why people are talking about eleven individuals, but I don't see much beyond that. I think that Emily Blunt would've made a great Major. Get her in the shape she was in for Edge of Tomorrow and you could at least get me over the line on her being an actual soldier who has seen some shit. I know that people will trot out the 'but muh cyborg body thing' and while it's true, it's a lot easier to pull that off in CG or cell animation than it is with actual actors. Go watch the second Star Trek reboot movie to see what happens when you take a lanky actor (Benedict Cucumber) and try to use special effects to make them seem superhumanly strong. You need some physical presence.

Edge of Tomorrow had a pretty muted showing in the box despite it's critical praise.
I suspect that how well the GitS movie does will reflect how Hollywood proceeds with manga adaptations.
If it does poorly their doubts will be confirmed and they will go back to being gun shy about adapting Japanese things.
If it does well they'll probably try to cash in, how much they do probably depends a lot on how long superhero movies keep printing money.
Personally I think GitS will do fine in the box office. The movie will probably be garbage but the success of Lucy suggests Johansson has the star power (if not the acting ability) to carry an action film regardless of how awful it is.

Scarlett Johansson isn't as big of an issue as the director, who's only ever made Snow White and the Huntsman. But we know it's going to be shit. The questions is how good the marketing is to lure in the mainstream crowd and make them interested in the name.

GITS should be the easiest anime to adapt. It's basically a sci-fi police procedural with memorable characters and some well established themes and hallmarks.
Of course this adaptation will blow it by having zero personality and craftsmanship. And the characters we all know and love will be unrecognizable.
It's going to be shit, but even then most people won't even know what it's based on.

Unless the setting is a western one(like Berserk, it's pretty safe to say that almost everyone is white) It's most likely the opposite 90% of the time. A setting like Ghost in the Shell which takes place in Japan, most of the characters are without a doubt japanese. Besides, the Major would be pretty easy to recognize if she were white, not really the best when you are supposed to be a secret agent working for a part of homeland security that officially doesn't exist.
