and hes had some overboard murderous moments i dont think its any different

How, exactly? Guts was a solitary edgelord for like 15 years of his life, it took him some time to warm up to the Hawks, and then he had it all violently torn away from him on top of getting cursed and having the love of his life turn into a potato. Maybe Puck loosened him up a bit, but Guts had no regard for other human life until after Conviction.
