Funi is known for cramming a lot of episodes per disc. 6 isn't really overkill for a DVD9 but you do get some PQ benefit from splitting over multiple discs. Japanese discs are usually much better in that regard -- fewer episodes/disc means more bytes per episode, so a higher bit rate. Also usually only one audio track and no subs -- bitrate which can go to the video stream instead.
Funi's quality is hit or miss in that regard. Still not as bad as Sentai trying to fit 12 episodes on a BD50. I'm very wary of their Shirobako release for that.
My favorite's Jungle de Ikou, but I know it's entirely due to nostalgia.

If that startles you, then clearly you haven't read enough books or watched enough movies/shows/animation.
The thing was ass and clearly just an excuse to draw tits, but the three human kids were actually pretty likable for their minor presence and the designs were rather nice (even though the art driftedintk the worst kind of generic 90's shit at times).
It could have made for a strange magical girl series or at least a decent sex comedy, but...the OVA itself is just bad.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is technically an OVA despite being 110 episodes (for the core series). If we exclude LOGH, Tsuiokuhen is the best OVA of all time. Then Seikai no Senki III. Then Seisouhen and Record of Lodoss War and Golden Boy and many others before FLCL.
