It's not that it's hard to get, I just want to get a better understanding of the genre in general. Maybe there's something I didn't know that would make the experience richer, such as the prevalence of certain tropes, character types, etc. and how they're presented in Madoka. Because right now it feels like I'm going on a whole lot of assumptions.

If anything the more one dives into Magical Girl the more likely they are to dislike Madoka.
On the other side, people who have watched only bits and pieces of magical girl before seem to praise it up to the heavens.
Furthermore, Urobuchi has already said he never watched a magical girl before making Madoka, even with Shinbo's help he would never be able to deconstruct something he did not know.
It's a good show for what it is.
