Honestly seeing as how the pacing of the anime and how its been universally agreed that this is one of the few examples where the anime > manga, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this is being phased out.
I love Airi and her character, but she ultimately doesn't really fit into the whole scheme of things and definitely won't fit given the time constraints now.
I was a bit disappointed when we found out that the killer was exactly who we all thought it was.

Besides, Airi's really important for Satoru because she was the one who inspired him to start believing in himself (chapter 18). As anyone watching or reading this thing should know, lack of self-confidence was Satoru's main issue, so this puts Airi at the core of his character development.

Basically, someone from A-1 introduced the manga to the director and the anime was decided when the third volume was released (coincidentally, where the last episode ended). What the director loved the most was everything from 1988 because he's about the same age than Satoru and he loved the nostalgia. The director might have had his own story in mind when he contacted the producers.
That fake or not fake interview about focusing more on Kayo makes sense considering everything that's happened in the anime so far, especially the slow-ass pacing, but I don't honestly believe it, my guess is that everything from now on it's going to be rushed as hell.

Ok, so I actually remember reading this boring ass book back in junior high school. The general gist of the book was that Kandata was some dude who was an awful person in general and was burning in Jigoku (Hell) when the Buddha saw him down there. Remembering that he had once not killed a spider, the Buddha offers mercy to Kandata by lowering a spider thread for him to climb on. He climbs but so does everyone else in Hell and it snaps the string, sending them all back to Hell. The Buddha saw this and was sad that Kandata was selfish for his own sake. Yet, the only way he could have left Hell was by killing all of the other people down there with him.
The comparison to this story is that the Teacher was Kandata and he saw the "spider's thread" since he was in "Hell" with his brother since they were both complicit in murdering/raping other girls. In order to prevent his own "spider string" from snapping, and comparing it to the hamster that survived by floating on the corpses of its enemies, Teacher kills his brother to prevent anyone else from climbing his "spider's thread." He does the same thing by killing his fiancee. However, this didn't change anything in the end and Satoru was still climbing on his spider thread, snapping it and sending them both to Hell.
In short, the story is heavily implying both of them will kill each other in the end.

The idea here is that the guilt of doing the shit over and over for his brother got to him and he found out that he actually enjoyed doing it because it was one of the few things that he did that gained any sort of validation or trust from his brother.
