That is the problem. I don't know which director had this brilliant idea to put all these Looney Tunes-like facial expressions and comedy into the trash, but god bless him for this.

I think it has all of those weird expressions because despite how serious it is or how great the art can be, it's still a 1973 manga, and you'd be hard pressed to find one that didn't do that sort of shit.
