As for their recent animes, they're the hippest studio imo. Plus their overall animation quality is just unique and beautiful. Characters, backgrounds, bgm.
They took something simple and sweet (Tamako Love Story) and animated it so well. Personally it was a masterpiece.
They've mastered their character style imo. Ever since hyouka maybe?
They're one of the few studios, if not, the only one who utilizes DOF, bokeh etc, and cinema filters. I'm sure there's much more unique methods they have but these are the ones I've noticed in their newer (post 2013) amines Tamako Love Story, Hibike, Phantom World.

Amagi is a solid 7.5 in my book. I don't know why people hate fun.
Phantom, though, depends if you wanna split hairs, but it comes out to about a 5.5 in my book based on my calculation methodologies. So if 5 is average is it SLIGHTLY above it.
The reason being, with KyoAni, it always looks amazing and usually has a great soundtrack. Story, characters, etc. can all be shit, but it will be carried to at least average.

Consistency. There are million talented people in other studios, many lot greater than KyoAni stuff, but NONE of the studios can make a single episode in consistent quality for shit let alone whole season.
This season is great example with Deadhouse having great start with STRIDE and fucking it up. Same with Bones, JC Staff, Sunrise (which can draw but usually doesnt since it cost money).
The only studio that can rival KyoAni in that aspect (i.e. doing their work seriously and not outsorcing everything to north koreans) is PA Works, but even they, as Haruchika this season shows slack, allow QUALITY and bad direction and while able to maintain high consistency, not always do that.
ITT: KyoAni is the only studio that actually seemingly LOVES what it does - with consistent quality, attention to detail, nuanced direction, putting a lot of work into whatever they do. As opposed to other studios that seems to be whores full of make up sucki dick for money with no enthusiasm and only from time to time showing off to sell themselves better.

Godakobo might love their cute girls, but they cant keep the quality consistent, even at their best shows.
Its probably best studio for comedy sols to go (i wish SinergySP was alive) aside Liden Films, but they dont exactly have much resources - and their experiments in action/fujoshi genre all are failures without exeption as Aria last season or this time Luck and Logic.
Even shows like Nozaki, Himouto, GJ-Bu - arent actually great animated (i.e. have great animated moments, but not consistently having poor at other parts). Mikakunin was last show they actually tried to animate well, Himouto for example was poorer.

Yes they can. YY1 was literally perfect. Nozaki-kun was consistently great as well. It's not all about animation and there aren't any standout QUALITY moments. It's not about imitating a camera's technical qualities. When we talk about cinematography we talk about simple rules like the 180 degree rule, composition, or conceptual tools like frame, light and color, movement, texture, POV, etc. Imitating real life lens quality is just part of overall composition of the frame because it does nothing more than expand/compress the shot and play with perspective.

There are a few blog and twitter posts both in japanese and english that talk about how life is as an animator in japan
