Anyone here old enough to still own fansubbed VHSs?

I watched it on VHS, but not keep them anymore.
>>
>>137310884
Yup, I've got all of Kenshin on VHS as well as some other random titles (Kenshin is the only one that I have completed on VHS). I haven't watched them in years but I still hold on to them.
>>

Maybe he is from those weird ass country that called them VCRs?
>>
>>137316076

VCR is the machine that plays VHS tapes.

I never had fansubbed VHS tapes. Lived out in bumfuck, nowhere.
>>
I had a terribly dubbed Silverfang on VHS.
They just voiced over the original voices, and the VA's change after every fucking VHS.
There were four in total. Also censored to shit.
>>
Yes, and I used to have to save shitty hentai .jpgs on floppy disks to jack off to using a 36.6k modem. A $1000 desktop used to only have 2GBs of HDD space. You fuckers don't know how lucky you have it nowadays. I wonder who that is on /a/ was old enough to watch Evangelion when it aired on PBS back in 2000 in the San Francisco area, which was much earlier than when Cartoon Network picked it up. They also aired stuff like Bubblegum Crisis, Ranma, Lain, Key the Metal Idol, and a lot more. Fuck, I just did a search and found a 2002 posting regarding that stuff: http://www.toonzone.net/forums/threads/anime-on-pbs.3033561/

The change has been interesting in just the last few years in terms of access, however. We went from actually having subgroups to pretty much nothing with nearly everything being simulcast. It wasn't too long ago we were waiting for late night Mazui releases for Hyouka or Railgun, Eclipsed for Nodame Cantabile, or gg for Bakemonogtari.
>>
Nah, I threw them away at the time after I got them digitally.
So I replaced the vhs with a cd collection (it was cheaper and faster to buy pirated fansubs instead of downloading them).
I guess it would have been neat to keep them for nostalgia but VHS tapes are huge and it's not like they keep a good quality, in fact they degrade over time if you watch them a lot.
>tfw all the ecchi scenes had that noticeable loss of quality thanks to rewinding/pausing that scene too much

i have start wars vhs, no anime though.

Damn, now I'm remembering all those Evangelion sites I used to go to to read up on theories and see pictures. There aren't really dedicated fansites like that anymore, and everything is a wikia page. It would be amazing to see cached pages for all the anime and hentai sites I used to go to from the late 90s and early 00s.

>>
>>137316076
hey, there are two types of VCR: VHS and Betamax for consumers. VTR is a more general term that includes professional formats such as two-inch reel to reel, as well as the early home reel-to-reel formats in 1 inch and half inch
>>
Is there anybody who owns anime on some esoteric format like Betamax?
>>
>>137318136

hows betamax esoteric? It was literally the standard format you dumb nigger
>>
>>137318136

VHS had already won by my time, but my parents did own a Laser Disk player. Wasn't old enough to buy or really be into anime at that time, however.

I wonder what happened to everyone around my age when we used to go on AOL 3.0 or 4.0 "Japanimation Chats" on the ANT Online site. Did they grow out of anime unlike me?

I'm already 30 and can't see myself growing out of it. In fact, I'm deeper down the rabbit hole than ever before because I love stuff the old me would have never accepted back then.

betamax still sold and used in various south american and asian countries, Sony stopped making the equipment in 2002 and this year they stop making the tape

I still have Slayers although I think at least one of them is shitted up now. You know when the tape snags and gets cinks/wrinkles trying to stuff it back in even using a screwdriver to properly wind it up? Yeah.

Not to mention I believe for basically anything recorded on VHS that that consumer tape degrades faster than the professional grade stuff. All of that stuff is degrading though; I also have had bit rot fuck up a few of my oldest PC games (sometimes they still work but are weirdly glitchy).

Were any of you in clubs/local groups where people traded/borroewed VHS? That's how I saw Ranma.
>>
>>137323796

OP here, I was part of a sort of group of people that gathered every weekend on a park to talk, trade, share anime and manga, met some of them at a convention in 1998, because I was doing a cosplay of Trunks, and met other cosplayers there, one of them was a Pan. They invited me to go with them on the weekend and I went with my mom, lol, I was 12.
After that first time, I started going alone, and met all sort of people. There were actually a lot of people there, probably over 50 or 70. There were all sort of people there, fans of sci-fi, fans of shoujo, some people would bring their drawing portfolios, others would bring their trading card collections, I remember this one girl who had hundreds of Sailor Moon ones on a folder.

I made a lot of friends there, everyone was friendly because everyone was excited to meet other people with similar tastes. I borrowed a lot of manga and videos, in fact I saw Death and Rebirth and EoE for the first time thanks to that group, otherwise it would have been hard to come by those movies back in '98.
>>
>>137323796
My town has a permanent fleamarket of sorts, there's a corner that is dedicated to video games and anime, so you could buy copies (of copies). No renting but we did trade a lot in there.
Also there was a dude that had a store dedicated to trading cards, and there was an anime club that used that as gathering place or to recruit people, which was basically only a trading group.
I got some betamax fansubs from both places and I had to ask a neighbour for a betamax player because we only had a vhs one.
When CDs/computers were more common we had a dude in our local group that had a burner (remember how burners/writers weren't norm) and he made copies for us for a buck or so (we just gave him blank cds).
This is how I got my first evangelion rip, which I still have backed up.
>>
I can remember my first anime I torrented was Nin-Nin-Ga Shinobuden in 2004, subbed by DeathSquad.

...but they died before subbing the last two episodes. Took me a few years to find those subbed by another group.

What was your first torrented anime, /a/?
>>
>>137318343

I know the top left is 1 pound gospel, but the rest escape me, although the art is familiar, is it Takahashi?
>>
>>137326761

First torrented I don't remember, but I do remember what was the first anime I actually downloaded when I first got broadband in 2001, Street Fighter Alpha movie from Kazaa, and Initial D episodes, which I remember I found for direct download on some website. I couldn't believe I was able to download whole episodes in an hour or so. With 56k I had to wait hours for 5 or 10 minute videos.

And then some, yeah. Back in the dark days of having to know groups and be involved in trading.

I really should dump them because LOLVHS but I still keep them for stupid nostalgia. Even stuff like Teki wa Kaizoku has digital versions, but I keep the tapes anyway.
>>
>>137328545
Kazaa was how I discovered anime. I was convinced that the TV studios were maliciously withholding episodes from everyone because they would only show one a week. And I thought "The internet has EVERYTHING! Surely some ally of justice has uploaded all the un-aired episodes to the internet already!" Then to my excitement, I actually found stuff on Kazaa, but alas, the video would not play, it was a black screen but I could hear the audio! That was how I discovered video encoding. And of course you can imagine my confusion after realizing that the entire show was in Japanese and not just the opening song. But hey, since I'd be able to watch, I didn't mind having to read the subtitles. And that was how I became a fucking weeaboo. After a year or two of being exposed to it, I was already at the point where I wouldn't be caught dead watching a dub.
