It's supposed to be ugly and unpleasant to watch. That's what reality is. The real world is ugly to look at. The real world is unpleasant to experience it. /a/ may bitch about the animation but the real reason why they don't like Aku no Hana is because it reminds them of what an awful world we live in and it reinforces in them what terrible people we all are. /a/ says that they want more deep, psychological-themed anime, but the truth is they can't handle it if there aren't cute/sexy girls involved like there are in Lain or Ergo Proxy.

Aku No Hana looks so weird because they exclude details we expect on human faces that are otherwise 100% realistic. They don't define noses most of the time, they aren't shaded, etc.
Look at the pic attached - her nose looks like two slits on a flat face. Her mouth is just an opening without any lip definition whatsoever.
It's possible to do realistic rotoscoping correctly. They didn't.
