I don't think mega evolutions were inherently bad. They brought some cool, but otherwise unviable mons back into play like Mawile. They problem was they gave them to the wrong people for the wrong reason, like did Garchomp really need a mega? Probably not. But I'm inclined to agree with you. Gamefreak/nintendo as whole isn't doing what they should to fix the glaring issues within the game.

No, see, part of what makes Mega Mawile so incredibly strong is that it IS a Mega Evolution. Mawile herself has an incredibly useful ability in Intimidate, which lowers the opponent's Attack stat and makes it much easier for it to switch into physical attackers. Mawile's newfound typing is incredible, but its still not very bulky and has middling defensive stats, so it needs everything it can get to take hits, even after its Mega Evolved and gotten Huge Power instead and can sweep. Furthermore, Mega Mawile gains no speed buff from Mega Evolving, so there is no disadvantage to having to go through Mega Evolution.
I have my problems with Mega Evolution, namely that it's been pandering to Pokemon who don't need the boosts, but after I got back into the meta, the obvious problems they present are a lot less ubiquitous than you'd think, although there's still the elephant in the room of there being a limited amount of Megas even though having one has become almost a staple. Even so, you don't actually usually see the Mega Evolutions of Garchomp, Tyranitar, and Blaziken... because those Pokemon are already good and it's kind of a waste of your Mega slot to use them rather than something that could use the Mega Evolution and uses it real fucking well, like Gardevoir, Mawile, and Altaria.
All that in mind, don't get too optimistic. Pokemon meta is still shitty at a glance, but I dunno, it has its charms. Current VGC rules are -absolutely garbage- though and basically demand you have Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, or both, not to mention fucking Xerneas.

Exactly, Mega Evolutions are great conceptually but Gamefreak distributed them poorly.
Mega Evolutions should have gone to competitively unviable pokemon to help balance and bring variety to their metagame, but instead, about half of the Megas we got were just purely pandering to popularity like Rayquaza, Charizard getting 2 Megs, Blaziken getting one long before any other Hoenn starters, Salamence, Metagross, etc.

I'd say giving one to Audino was a good idea. In fact, in general I think that giving the Mega forms to pokemon that do not otherwise evolve would have been the best general rule to have. Then, if at a later point they get an evolution, it can put the player in a tight spot as to whether they are willing to sacrifice the Mega for a full evolution.

Let's be fair, Charizard getting two Mega Evolutions was fine. Not only can it use those Mega Evolutions, it's an iconic Pokemon. I'd have rather it gotten those Evolutions than Blaziken.
Mega Rayquaza is just fucking broken and led to Smogon creating an entire new tier just to exile it from our midst forever.
The problem with Mega Blaziken is that its strategy does not even remotely change or expand as a result of its Mega Evolution. Mega Blaziken is just a better Blaziken, but is not actually that much better at any job that Blaziken already did. Not enough to warrant wasting your Mega Evolution. Which is why you don't see it as often as you otherwise might.
Mega Salamence is pretty big in the meta. You -maybe- could argue it deserved it since Salamence was finally beginning to fall off in usage and influence, but then... you don't see any other pseudo-legendary falling off in that way fucking bitching.
Mega Metagross looks like a horrifying boss monster on paper but is actually relatively easy to play around.
