I think it's dumb to single out individual lines in the dub or the very unprofessoinal scanlation and say "LOL DEVILMAN IS FUCKING STUPID ONLY RETARDS LIKE THIS UNIRONICALLY"
There's a lot of shit that doesn't make sense in the plot, but the same applies to a ton of other stories considered classics. The reason Devilman, like many other fantasy classics, works so well is not because the "plot" makes realistic sense but because it's a thematically coherent emotional journey.

The one plot development in Devilman I can understand people going "lol this is dumb"at was the "underground hippy club" thing. I mean technically you could get a bunch of crazt, high-as-fuck cultists to do that (watch a Spirit Science video if you give humanity too much credit" but how the hell did Ryo build those underground passageways? Did he spend all his dad's money in having a bunch of secret passageways installed? Did his dad already have them for whatever reason? It's not COMPLETELY nonsensical but it's just a huge thing that the manga never elaborated upon in the slightest.
But beyond that and other smaller flaws (the dialogue could be pretty awkward, but even then I dunno if I blame Nagai or the scanlators;it could easily be the latter), it's a well-written story with a good, well-executed theme. It was extremely influential in its time and even now it's fun to read. The manga isn't really good at things like anatomy and perspective but stylistically it's absolutely amazing and very creative.
So then how many of us could agree Devilman, while having some unintentionally funny stuff in it, is overall unironically good?

Well to add to this, the OVAs focused too much on the lamest part of the 80s run of Violence Jack: the huge amount of guro and other weird fetishy stuff, which is also present in series like Berserk but paces itself better. 80s VJ spent too much time on rape and not enough on cool shit.
The 70s shonen run has none of that stuff though, and then there's Shin Violence Jack which is still seinen but kept away from the guro rape. I think Nagai realized adding it to begin with was a bad idea (or maybe it was an editor thing "MAKE IT EDGIER, THIS IS AN ADULT MAGAZINE WITH GORE AND TITS").
