Just a quick question, I'll delete this thread after I have my answer or you can turn it into a general discussions thread. I rewatched GitS today and I wanted to get deeper into the IP since I have watched any of the other GitS shows/movies yet.
Where do I start? SAC + second gig? I've heard arise is worthless. What about the "new movie"?

The Stand Alone Complex movies are garbage, and so is Arise.
I've heard that GITS 2 is pretty good, but it's the only thing I haven't seen yet.
SAC and 2nd GIG are awesome, with 2nd GIG being one of my favorite anime to this day. Solid State Society isn't a bad movie and makes a few nods towards the first movie.
Arise is a drastically different show in comparison to the others, and is more action based. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I could see how some people enjoy it.
So gits is to arise as NGE is to rebuilds? Seems like the consensus is arise is actiony. Is it actually bad, or just bad compared to gits?

It's very generic and uninspired. The Major isn't as interesting this time around, nor are any of the other characters. That said, I think the other characters get more screen time than they did in the first season of SAC, but it doesn't matter much when they're boring. But yes, overall it's more action packed, less politics and philosophy.
That said, you could argue that SAC and 2nd GIG are more action packed and dumbed down than the original movie, but they're still a great watch.

I liked the arises. non-canon, but another enjoyable look into the universe. It's like those classroom-based sidestories manga get, like that wrid BLAME! one. It was fun seeing all the characters come together. And some old school Araraki. Give them a try, don't get hooked on these dicks' dicks

What they're getting at is that, when she was human, she was female. Now that she's in a completely prosthetic body, it doesn't really matter any more, and in the first movie, her body doesn't even really matter any more, her existence in itself is questionable because she can back her brain up and just exist on the net.
