I think both depictions don't really contradict each other; being smart and "virtuous" doesn't mean you can't be an arrogant sex addict and control freak with a god complex. The problem came from the writers making him too powerful and running out of time so they had the guy making decisions so Ange and co. had any hope to defeat him.
Cross Ange needed at least another cour.

From there he had all the time in the world to research. It's not really crazy that he'd die once people found his little hiding spot.
I went in watching this anime expecting fan service and lesbians, and I got a entertaining story with fan service and lesbians, and canon sex between the male/female lead.
Truly, an amazing series.
