It's not LNshit but it goes so far in the other direction that in attempting to not make it a deranged escapist power trip where everybody verbally or literally fellates the MC, they've made everyone so incompetent to the point where they've made no meaningful progress, and the character interaction is so cliche, dry and half-baked that even the hopes of an engaging ensemble can't even save it.

I don't think a show that tries to be comfy kills off one of its main characters mid season.
I think Grimgar is good because it's realist. The characters act like human beings for once (the guy shivers in fear when he hits the goblin's bone) and the story show the problems a fantasy-like world would bring to common people.
It's not like SAO, Overlord or Log Horizon where the characters are experienced players and there's hardly any consequences in mind. They're all good anime, but characters like Kirito are romantized. He is always battle ready, has no fear in fighting monsters - the idea is that Grimgar deals with those situations with more reality. That's why I like Grimgar.

Manato's fatal battle was changed to change the pacing. In the LN that battle was a skill check in which the rest of the team fell apart and when they lost Manato that was devastation and the LN spent a fourth of its length on their recovery. All that was condensed to one episode and was done so by changing the tone in that the team was doing well but met up with a goblin team on the otherside who was better matched and losing their MVP was a major setback.
This show is exactly how playing an MMORPG feels like, going through that EXP grind with a 3D on the team that has a nice ass, or nice boobs, or a pretty face, or a kansai accent who you could dream of waifuing makes it all worth it.
