That's just part of the sci-fi, I'd say. And also a general theme. Alpha is an ideal: a mature woman, an android, whom he looks up to but can't pursue a relationship with due to circumstance and because she isn't interested in that way. Makki is close at hand and feels strongly for him -- she's also human. In the end he settles because he ought to.
Not that I've read that far. And that's my own interpretation.
