Started watching Gintama and I'm currently at episode 18
I have high hopes for this but right now I'm strugling to watch each episode... The humour is terrible and it seems aimless.
So far the only reasons that keeps me in it is based Sugita as Gintoki and that sometimes the episodes show glimses of the background of the characters.

General consensus is that it gets good around ep 25. It actually just gets better and better over time, which is unusual for a long running series, but the running jokes build on themselves and it becomes consistently hilarious. It's worth sticking with, but if you're struggling to watch it, I'd recommend reading some of the manga. It's a quicker way to figure out if you like it, I switched to the anime around vol 6.

If you can't stomach the humor, there is a chart some anon made with the relevant 'serious' arcs, so you just jump around them and watch only the relevant shit. (I wouldn't recommend it, tho, because there are many good characters that only appear mostly on 'goofy episodes', like the Shogun.)

If you can keep up with it, Gintama becomes incredibly rewarding and it's arguably the best Shonen series.
It is difficult to push through, but stay with it, the running jokes and references in the comedy episodes are golden, and the dramatic arcs have brought me to tears many times.

Gintama really is a very loose retelling of the end of the shogunate in japan. After the Boshi war, Katsura & friends restored the power to the emperor (which is not the same as the shogun).
Gintama is already on the verge of this war, or maybe the current arc is supposed to be the war. After this they'll be invading Rurouni Kenshin's territory, the Meiji era.
Episode 25 is legendary, after that it only gest better

I think the funny arcs really compliment the serious ones. Kaguras one of the funniest characters in the show so when you see bad shit happening to her its really heartbreaking. I don't think this last arc would have the same impact without the Shogun comedy episodes.

Katsura absolutely won't. He would maybe before hand in some hilarious Joi Patriot vs Bakufu comedy episode with shenanigans. The Shogun Assassination arc is a complete game changer though. The Shinsengumi and Katsura are now comrades more than enemies. There's a mutual respect that's been developing with them over time.
In fact, I would expectKatsura to be joining the fight to rescue Kondo from persecution in the current arc.

They still do them, but not as much as they did in the first two or three seasons. They even stop doing parodies to other anime every episode too.
It seems that the gorilla used those as crutches until he had enough material to work properly. Of course he still use them sometimes, but now he can rely on character interactions to do his thing.

I started to watch Gintama when the anime was relased, so many years ago. I watched only the first 50 episodes saying "Meh". I started to see it again many years after because happened, and I appreciated it more, a now is one of my favourite anime, and I can't imagine to be without it. I can't say why, probably the reason was that the old me, liked more the character MADAO, sadly actually is not very visible in the anime.
