I watched it first in dub and most of it made sense to me. The plot is pretty straight-forward actually. I just thought it was boring and mostly unpleasant to watch, also I hated those last two episodes. It was the movie that confused and upset me, and I only came to understand it by lurking in threads. I still think it's overly-nihilistic and doesn't have much of a positive message at all. I still don't like Eva that much and I think the fans are just overly-nostalgic. Your poll is dumb OP because it is too vague about a subject that is very complex and subjective.

It's hard to attain to every specific case. Though I'm curious as to what those were.
I watched the english dub and mostly really enjoyed it but I had no idea what was going on in EoE.

It's kind of hard to understand lots of the stuff without watch EoE.
I watched the original dub and understood it.
I think the last two episodes came out of left field but eoe made up for it.
I still have conflicting opinions on Eva because while the overall plot is a mess the entire subject matter about depression still hits me quite hard.
I still won't call it good but it is fascinating. Like watching a sixty car pile up. You just can't look away.
It's one of the few reasons i still hold out hope for 3.0+1.0 or whatever dumb title it decides to call itself.
If Shinji gets a happy ending, perhaps it can act as a validation to my younger self, and to me now in many respects, that i can somehow attain a similar happiness.

At first I watched it when I was 9 years old inrusdub. All the symbolism and most of the deep monologues and character's motivations went over my head, but plot wise it was pretty clear to me what's happening. Later I rewatched it but I had knowledge from lurking with me that time.
