Here is a thread for people deeply interested in what japanese anime (or even manga) has to offer.

Want to share your last really unknown but worthy to be mentioned title? Here is the place.

Want to talk more seriously about precise stuff like a personality background and evolution in the industry? Here is the place.
>>
So for starters, I recently learned about g-anime and what Toei do for some artists to be able to express themselves with more freedom in shorts like pic related.

What do you think of this (already old) initiative?
>>
Is g-anime the convention those L'Animation indépendante japonaise shorts come from?
I've only seen a few but most I didn't find terribly interesting. Midoriko had a great art style and was absolutely fucking weird, so it was probably my favorite.
>>
>>137124130
>or even manga
Who the fuck would waste time trying to earn the title of connoisseur with anime when manga is right there and way better. It's like becoming the best at some shitty old n64 game no one ever played, go play something else instead.
>>
>>137125377
Yeah, so share a little of your connoissance in manga.

>>137125216
>L'Animation indépendante japonaise

I don't think it has anything to do with a convention, I found this article for more information http://journal.animationstudies.org/sheuo-hui-gan-the-newly-developed-form-of-ganime-and-its-relation-to-selective-animation1-for-adults-in-japan/

Personally I loved Fantascope: Tylostoma but I haven't seen much of them.
>>

Oh, alright. I thought you were referring to

>>
haha what a fucking autistic manchild
>>
>>137128229
Yeah sorry, I've seen it written in multiple ways so I'm not sure.
>>
>>137128164
>画ニメ
This sounds pretentious as fuck.
Right up my alley
>>
>>137128402
>画ニメ
Oh yeah that's Ga-nime and not G-anime, that's why.

And yeah that's a bit pretentious, but interesting too.
>>
haven't seen ganime shit but bought the hosoda directed one and it turned out to be a literal slideshow.
hopefully gonna get through the series eventually

That sounds so pretentious. Why didn't you start the thread just asking for independent animation or stuff like that?

Because then it wouldn't sound pretentious, sorry, I mean profound, anymore, duh.
>>
>>137130280
Why not be pretentious once in a while. It's interesting to actually put yourself in the shoes of the pretentious guys and try to see what they see. It's like the arthouse side of japanese anime, it's fun to discover weird things.

Does anyone have recommendations for patrician slice of life manga?

>in b4 oxymoron
>>
>>137130618
Have you read Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou and ARIA?
>>
>>137130618
Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms maybe, and Harukana Machi e (and the others from those authors)
>>
>>137130501
See, this is where you've a mistake. There have been threads talking about weird, obscure and experimental works. And they worked out great because people were just being genuine fans and there's no pretension in how they present themselves.

Being pretentious is the absolute opposite end of appreciating arthouse side of anime. The pretentious guys are just obnoxious and that's all there is. There's no substance to it because they are much more concerned about being smug than actually talk about the content.
>>
>>137130708
I'd seen the anime for these, but hadn't thought to read the manga, thanks!
>>137130726
These look great, thanks!
>>
>>137130947
Actually I know, but I don't know how this kind of discussion spawn around here, and the only pretentious thing is the term connoisseur right? The rest doesn't really feel pretentious. But connoisseur is since a long time an ironic term.
>>
>>137130947
I've never seen a thread about independent/experimental animation that wasn't full of shitposting one way or another. If anything I'm impressed this thread hasn't yet reached that level.
>>
>>137131074
>but I don't know how this kind of discussion spawn around here
This is why you lurk more before posting.

>>137131113
Same goes for you.
>>
>>137131127
And to you, please stop posting since none of what you're writing is of any value.
>>
>>137131180
The archive is there for a reason, no need to get pissy on me just because you don't see any of those threads.
>>
So I'll lurk more, but now that the thread is made, how about participating correctly, so you'll not be responsible for it turning into shitpostland.
>>
>>137124130
>Connoisseur
That's just asking for shitposting.
>>
>>137124130
Holy shit this is the most pretentious thing I've read in the week. Congrats senpai.

Eh I'll give this thread the benefit of a doubt.

These are some manga that I like but /a/ doesn't discuss much.

>houseki no kuni
As if Sailor moon had a lovechild with angel's egg. Great art, mystery and atmosphere

>birdmen
Shounen but the kind of shounen a jaded oldfag like me would enjoy. Borderline deconstruction of the genre I would say.
>>
>>137130618
Thermae romae
>>
>>137132389
Your descriptions are very interesting, Houseki no Kuni is tempting. I hope that is your pic related, that's nice art.
>>
>>137132389
The only reason Houseki no Kuni is being scanlated was because someone on /a/ kept pushing it.

>deconstruction
Way to sound like an idiot.

>>
>>137124130

>>137132389
>houseki no kuni
I like it, but people keep describing it as some weird patrician manga and I don't really get that. It seems fairly simple aside from the setting.
>>
>>137124130
>japanese anime
As opposed to?
>>
>>137132644
Try it. It doesn't explain much but there are many things going on that aren't apparent so that makes it feel patrician I guess. Great art too.
>>
>>137132389
Both of those come up regularly, though. Are you just sitting in the catalog waiting for neatly labeled threads or something?
>>
>>137132729
I'm the guy shilling them in threads though. Seen both being mentioned like twice the last 6 months.
>>
Is this a Sakuga thread?

Ok I have a conoisseur's anime right here.

Violinist of Hameln
It has a moe rpg fantasy setting with some of the cheapest money saving tricks you've ever seen in anime.
>panning shots over stills
>reused fotage
>no lip movement
It also has magic through classical music and a story befitting a greek tragedy.
And on top of one of the best endings in anime history it got ZERO filler. Like even the one bathing scene is also used as exposition.
Be special and see it. Join me and five other anons with that distinction.

Shiet he did Hameln? No wonder I loved it!
Please senpai, are there any other Imagawa works you would recommend?
>apart from aoat pic related
>>
>>137133798
I checked the credits after posting and found out he was Hameln's writer and not the director. Whoops.

I'm not an expert on Imagawa, haven't even watched G Gundam or Hameln for that matter.
>>
>>137133932
If you plan to watch more of his stuff, go watch some martial arts films first if you want to get some of the homage and references he throw around.

This is especially true in G Gundam where he references quite a fair bit from the movie adaptations of Jin Yong's novel, The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. The film trilogies are titled The Swordsman (1990), The Swordsman II (1992) and The East Is Red (1993) if you're interested.

These people are the worst. "Actually, this show is shit, you should go watch these music video collaborations for real visual experimentation."
>>
>>137135056
I'm trying to get rid of namedropping. It's dumb and nobody cares.
>>
>>137135409
Depends on the context, it's nice to use the names of people in order to become more aware of them.
>>
>>137135469
This. My favorite Japanese animators? Iso, Okiura, Matsumoto, Ohira, Yutapon, Tanabe, Yoh Yoshinari, Hashimoto, Inoue, Hisashi Mori, Utsunomiya, the list goes on!

Wasn't this such an informative comment!

Yup, him. Something to look forward to this year.

Speaking of this year, what are you guys looking forward to? Bunch of great movies, it looks like. Not much for TV though, but I'll probably be surprised.
>>
>>137135699
I remember in like 2010 some guy listed a dozen animators he liked and everyone took that as a sign of real interest in animation. Now everyone just tosses sakuga bullshit around and no one actually has anything interesting to say.
>>
>>137136528
It's got an association with that Twitter community which triggers rejection.
>>
>>137135056

Enjoying Birdmen immensely. If you are looking for a list of eclectic manga, Hox (nice guy who scanalates Vinland saga) has a fairly extensive list on his blog:
