It's a bit tricky to describe what makes it so great. If you're worried about it being unoriginal you'll be happy to know that the mangaka's imagination is completely off the hook. If you're worried about it being overly unpleasant, however, you're probably not going to like it. Even though you know you're looking at a fucked up world through the eyes of a deranged person, the series always find a way to subvert your expectations and serve you a nice big shit sandwich. But to say that it's focused on brutality would be inaccurate since the brutality is presented in a very matter of factly way, like that's just the way things are, and the series instead goes more personal, into the deranged minds of the world's inhabitants and the complicated situations they find themselves in.

Usually the stuff you have on your 3x3s strike me as works with imaginative settings and unique visual designs. Freesia never striked me as anything among similar lines. If it were an anime, film or even book I'd probably check it out but I feel like I haven't read enough manga to strain to far away from my preferences.

Well obviously but there's not much more I can go by on, unless I know the author, which in this case I don't. But actually I just read a description that convinced me to read iton tv tropes. Plus I also googled a bit and the inside art looks a lot more appealing to me than the covers gave off.
Far removed might have been a poor choice of words, It's more that not much from the premise or cover art suggested anything fitting my preferences not necessarily anything I dislike in particular.

What do people here think of post cel-era anime? As much as I like anime from the 90s and earlier and think it worked really well with darker series like Eva or Lain I also can't imagine something in the style of Tatami or Kyousougiga being done back then.

Top right is Drifting Classroom, if you're an Ito fan then you're bound to like it since the author influenced him quite a lot. Having read from both managakas you can really see the influence on Ito's work from Umezu.
I would buy the actual printed version but volume 7 I think is out of print and RIDICULOUSLY hard to find I heard. I'm hoping for a nice, hardcover omnibus release in the future considering Viz released it.

Anime, definitely. While they're both superb, I think the voice acting and the comedy delivery make the anime adaptation better. Though I guess I'm a bit biased since I prefer watching sports series to reading them.
