He's a kid who started out weak willed, but eventually proved himself strong, and grew a spine.
He had a whole moment after he beat Shin, where he realized "Yeah, I am strong, and I will win".
Seems like a good investment; no matter what he ends up doing in life, he's got a decent amount of fame, power, and confidence already.

I can't decide whether or not this is one of my favorite sports series. On one hand, the art is gorgeous and it's mostly really well written. Also the All-Star tournament was just a waste of time and the manga should just have ended with the Christmas Bowl. It was pretty much the Agon and Gaoh show also starring the Japan All-Stars. They should have just made it just the match between Japan and America and forget about all the tournament.

There's something else I'm curious about because I remember reading an article at one point that indicated that Inagaki didn't just write but also did the rough layout/storyboarding. I was never able to find confirmation on that anywhere else but it does have me wondering because Eyeshield's layouts do seem a lot more dynamic than Murata's subsequent work.

I remember reading that Inagaki worked with Murata because he wasn't confident with his own art, but I also remember reading an interview with Len Wein where he talked about how artists felt really free with his scripts because he wrote stuff as an artist, that might have been it too.

Everyone of the rival team were great. I liked how there were almost no bad guys, just other teams. The only real "evil" team were the Shinryiuuji Naga (only because of Agon being a massive prick), the Hakushuu Dinosaurs (who pretty much crippled their opponents) and the American team.
