That would be Rie Matsumoto if she hasn't directed Kekkai Sensen.
>>
>>136378616
Still partial to Yamada but Matsumoto is promising as fuck. Y'know, if she hadn't done Kekkai Sensen.
What other young directors are there? Most of my favourites are getting old.

Colorido guys are worth keeping an eye on.
They're just 26-27 yo.
>>
>>136380244
Not really a fan of Arai but you're definitely right, Ishida is great and Nakamura (he's like 60 now I think though) is a genius. Hinata no Aoshigure wasn't my favourite but it's good to see Ishida taking on larger projects.

Hyouka is literally the only good anime he directed.
>>
>>136384395
And it's better than anything Yamada has directed.
>>
>>136382362
Yeah, I didn't like it. Very disappointing.

>>136382445
Hyouka was godlike but other than that, what? Certain scenes of Lucky Star and Disappearance? Nothing remotely as good as Hyouka.
>>
>>136384473
K-On! certainly has an argument. I think it's as well composed, just a matter of preference as to which you think is better.

Stay jelly, Takemoto-san.

What was so disappointing about it to you? You talk like it's a blight on Matsumoto's career.

K-On is nowhere near Hyouka.

It's hilarious how delusional Yamadafags and Koe no Katachifags are. Nobody actually believes this, right?
>>
>>136384648
I thought her her direction of Kekkai Sensen directly contributed to a lot of its flaws. Cinematographically experimental to a fault, often distracting. Lacked the sentimentality I'd come to love from Kyousougiga. Poor choreography in action scenes. Messy metastructure. Regarding K-On! we'll agree to disagree, I guess.

K-On!! is very near Hyouka.
>>
>>136385364
While Yamada is the only one of their "big" directors I really like they have promising episode directors there, too.
>>
>>136385496
I wonder which episode director will get their debut next.
>>
>>136385107
Guess we agree to disagree. I found Kekkai Sensen to be much better than the Kyousougiga TV series. I don't see how you can think the action was poorly choreographed though. Bones staff excel at action scenes and Kekkai Sensen had quite a few good ones. I can understand why you'd say it has a messy metastructure(if I'm correctly understanding what you mean by metastructure), but I think Matsumoto did a good job of interweaving the anime original story with the manga chapters.
>>
>>136385665
You'll have to forgive my being shit at names, but there's a short TV series based on that one Shinkai short film (She and Her Cat?) being directed by someone who worked on K-On! and Hyouka. Good episodes too. It's not made at Kyoani but that's where the director is coming from. Comes out in March I think?
>>
>>136385771
Kazuya Sakamoto.

He used to be very promising but some of his last works at KyoAni were pretty weak.
IIRC, he even apologized for his Chuu2 episode being bad on KyoAni's staff blog.
>>
>>136385693
Yeah, that's fine I'm not asking you to dislike it or anything. The choreography was very technically complex but I felt it made the scenes harder to follow. The action itself was good, well animated show. Metastructure just refers to the structure within the episodes themselves. Like, it felt very disjointed to me with very little sense of continuity. Standalone, episodic episodes interrupted the narrative, things would be dropped and reintroduced later on, stuff like that. Forgive my messy thoughts, I wish I had like, examples to back this up but I'm just recalling my own experiences.

Did you like Kyousougiga though? I adored it, not perfect but incredibly charming and heartfelt. Proudly wore its heart on its sleeve and was great for that. I'll never give up on Matsumoto so long as I can remember that show.
>>
>>136385665
Taiichi Ogawa.
>>
>>136385921
Ah, damn. I know him as the one behind the music festival episode in K-On!, the scene on the hill under the stars being a highlight of the whole show for me. I'll still watch it, see how he does.
>>
>>136385771
Interesting, thanks for the heads up.

Oshii is by far the best with literally no competition and that's because he sought inspiration and learned from the greats in cinema whereas seasonal anime directors and god awful anime movies nowadays learned from other terrible anime directors.
>>
>>136386198
Oshii is good but that's a very ignorant statement.
>>
>>136386315
Get taste.
Prove me wrong.
>>
>>136386363
It's got nothing to do with taste. I mean, Yamada's in the OP and she borrows a lot from American indie film, therefore you're proved wrong. The bulk of seasonal anime is bad but talented directors exist, pretending they don't while only praising the classics is just lazy.
>>
>>136386470
I read somewhere that she liked Roy Andersson and Sofia Coppola.
>>
>>136386470
>you're proved wrong
Jesus way to miss the point, retard.
Even so, American indie films are more often than not slightly less bad then seasonal anime. They fool you into thinking they're better because sometimes they'll do something more from the heart and stray away from dull tropes used in Hollywood, but that doesn't automatically make them better.
>>
>>136386363
That's a very compelling argument you've got there.
>>
>>136385944
Well the manga itself doesn't have much continuity. The stories are indeed episodic with nothing really linking them, but an anime original plot was added to give it some continuity and the ability to actually have a climax. Without that plot the show would have just ended with no real conclusion.

I liked Kyousougiga more before the TV series. The TV series wasn't really bad, but it didn't live up to my expectations. I feel Kyousougiga really excelled at getting the viewer to sympathize with the characters, which the first half did a fantastic job at. I can't remember why exactly but after episode 6 when it started getting into really new material, I didn't really like it. And the exposition dump in ep 9 was appalling. Matsumoto didn't even try to make it interesting. They literally just walked across the screen for like 2 and a half minutes straight.
>>
>>136386594
What's the point then? You said anime directors these days only learn from each other, I said that was ignorant and then backed it up.
You're complaining about a lack of good directors, but in the past few years we've had great films from Takahata, Nakamura, Yamada, Hara and Hosoda last year, this year we've got lots too, like Oishi and Katabuchi. That's just film, haven't touched on TV.

Name dropping is fucking gay, but my point is there are lots of talented people who work on the shit you claim to love, and I'm willing to wager you ignore a lot of it.
>>
>>136386798
Yeah, that was a bad episode. I still find myself forgiving it, though. As for Kekkai I'd probably if preferred full episodic even if it were inconclusive. One good thing about it was the setting and atmosphere (glorious soundtrack), I'd have liked to see it explored in a better fashion. I think if it were twice as long a continuous narrative would've worked better, but woe is modern anime.
>>
I like that anime has its own style independent of film. For instance, in Kekkai Sensen there's a part where the group is walking down a hall on the side of the screen with the camera at 90 degrees until they reach the end and suddenly approach from the other side on the bottom of the screen, in one seamless shot. Stuff like that never happens in film. Or Shaft's budget cutting, like in Hidamari Sketch the word "car" travels across the screen with a sound effect.
>>
>>136387424
That's literally a film thing though. And Shaft's quirks are hardly "budget cutting," but stylistic cuts like that are hardly representative of anime as a whole, more of the director who uses it.
>>
