When does the anime take place? I'm reading the manga and it seems like they're not related.

You're reading New Grappler Baki, you want to read through whats translated of the original series just called "Baki the grappler" first
also

>>136351028
like JoJo, Baki is split into parts.

1. Grappler Baki - covers Baki fighting as the champion of the underground fighting circuit, his training as a kid, and then the Maxim Tournament. The scanlations are only like halfway done, though. This is the part that got animated.

2. New Grappler Baki - prisoner escape arc, kaioh tournament, Ali Jr

3. Son of Ogre - black pentagon, pickle, and the final battle between Baki and Yuujiro

4. Baki-Dou - currently in production, scans are a few months behind. Seems to be about a resurrected Musashi Miyamoto so far.

No, that is the first. It starts out with Baki already the champion, then flashbacks for a while, then picks up in the present with the tournament.

What did you see of the anime?

I guess the anime was actually in two parts. The second part is the tournament, which is the part that isn't scanlated yet.

It's the best tournament arc of all time, imo.

I want to start reading it right now. Where should I start, grappler baki, new grappler or son of ogre?
>>
>>136351812
>>136351180
though honestly you can start with New Grappler Baki. It's like starting with DBZ - you don't really get a thorough explanation for who the Z Fighters are, but you pick up pretty quickly.
>>
Grappler baki up until the latest scalated chapter then New grappler baki and then baki so of ogre and finally the current baki Dou. New chapters are getting translated almost every week of the first and last series but you're looking at over 100 volumes of reading
>>
>>136351028
>>136351542
The anime starts with the flashback arc, then procceeds to present arc.

>>136351812
You can literally read fucking wikipedia piece of shit.

Anyways, start from the anime(unless you want to wait until 2020 when first part gets translated) then new grappler baki and so on.

The series was translated horribly out of order by myriad groups, each taking over the previous' gig without thinking about what else needed to be translated. The translation scene has been constantly plagued by retards, ESLs, and pay-walls; so it's been difficult even getting this much done.

A group I'm working with is translating the original series, but our pace is slow (1 chap weekly) and donation-walled by the translator. I'm hoping to convince him to lower the donations or up the number of chapters released, but I can't guarantee anything of course.

>he works for spiny
>with spiny
The latter is much more accurate

So here's the deal: we're waiting on HQ/redrawn raws for the next volume. Donations have come through, but they don't want to release really bad scans. Spiny's source for raws gave him the scanned volume but the spreads have large gaps in them (they didn't before), so he's just considering buying it and scanning it himself. The other option is to wait for the raw guys to potentially release something better, which we've done for a few weeks, so it looks unlikely.

The former option unfortunately means that it'll be a little while longer before any more scanlated chapters, but they'll likely be in higher quality, so that's good.

>>136359365
Most popular, clearly, given Hanayama's placement. I can't find the link to the Chinese scans anymore, and there aren't any Japanese ones out yet. What pissed me off about the poll was that Yuichiro and Pickle got that highly rated. We've seen Yuichiro literally once, he shouldn't be anywhere near that high. And Oliva is somehow higher than Shibukawa and Jack - Jack's in 14TH. What the fuck is that shit?

I fucked up because I didn't look at the text because I assumed it was Korean, it was strength. Chiba doesn't even register on that scale, he's just 24/7 plastered on hydromorphone so he doesn't feel pain.

Che should *not* be that fucking low, and Yasha Ape shouldn't even be close to any of the characters. Fucking Suedo could probably take him pretty easily now.
>>
>>136360222
Hanayama's a mutant who got as strong as he was without training. These polls are always dumb. Yuichiro being ranked so highly isn't unbelievable though if it was popularity, he's very Japanese with the fighting the US army during WW2 thing. In the Japanese poll for Kichikuou Rance, the most popular character after Rance was the literal who archer girl with barely any events who was the only Japanese commander in the game and named after a Japanese admiral

It's nothing new to be waiting for scans from the release dates I saw, but at least spiny isn't hitler

You're right about Yuichiro regardless; that's why Musashi is so high despite getting thwacked by Shibukawa. Only reason Shibukawa ultimately "loses" is because he lets Musashi get up.

The polls are always dumb, sure; but come on. Speck and Doyle are stronger than Che? Retsu is stronger than Kaku? Oliva is stronger than Shibukawa? We actually *saw* Shibukawa beat Oliva fucking twice. There's no rational reason I can think of, especially given how Japanese Shibukawa has shown himself.

Suedo almost beat Dorian - granted he was in rage mode about Retsu and they were doing a retarded death match on a rollercoaster, but he's nonetheless clearly been training hardcore since Maximum Tournament. If Suedo could now win against 15 year old Hanayama, he can beat Yasha Ape easily.
>>
>>136360668
>Retsu is stronger than Kaku?
That makes sense after he learned Xiaoli or however it's spelled, which was Kaku's selling point. Then he was like Kaku+.

About Shibukawa, Musashi took his technique on purpose just like when Baki's jab knocked him out. When he actually wanted to fight him the result was completely different.

Same with Oliva, he was "beaten" in a judo match. He wasn't going all out, but actually complying with Shibukawa and playing his own game. I only remember that one time though, so maybe I'm forgetting something because I don't know what you mean by twice.

>That makes sense after he learned Xiaoli or however it's spelled, which was Kaku's selling point. Then he was like Kaku+.
Kaku has way more than that, though. I've made a point of clarifying that in the past: remember how Retsu saw him using something in the Yuujiro vs. Kaku fight that "transcends original Chinese martial arts"? Retsu knew the limits of Xiao Lee, yet he had no idea what the fuck Kaku was doing or how to counter it. He made Yuujiro bleed quite a bit with it, too. He knows how to use swords and other weapons on a high level, and he's been off-screen training to get his body more back in-shape; hence no longer needing the wheelchair and him traveling around everywhere.

>About Shibukawa, Musashi took his technique on purpose just like when Baki's jab knocked him out. When he actually wanted to fight him the result was completely different.
Musashi's deal is that if he gets downed, he's "dead". Shibukawa could easily have stabbed him or something if he had a dagger on him - an area of fighting in which he's implied to also be proficient. It's because the current fighters like to fight fairly (unlike the fighters from Musashi's era) that he hasn't *truly* lost yet.

>I only remember that one time though, so maybe I'm forgetting something because I don't know what you mean by twice.
Oliva shakes Shibukawa's hand when both had intent to hurt the other, and gets floored instantly. He then fights Shibukawa's students and figures out what techniques they utilize. Shibukawa intervenes again after his students realize they're no match, and Oliva gets his entire right arm broken instantly with 0 reciprocation.

Each one has its own "purpose" in the scheme of the overall manga.

Grappler Baki is about establishing Baki as a character, exploring his past and motives, and revealing all of the major characters.

New Grappler Baki is about the major characters' stories and their fights, Baki maturing into his late teens through romance and sexual congress, introducing Baki's father as a multi-faceted character (but not to Baki himself) and establishing the differences between the world the Baki fighters live in and the world ordinary humans live in (hence the Ali Jr arc).

Baki: Son of Ogre is about Baki maturing into true adulthood and conquering his own fears, anxieties, regrets; coming to understand Baki's father with absolute clarity, and completing their "father-child" relationship. The series' tone matures with him - the most mature stuff in all of Baki is in here. It's centered around the approach and eventual confrontation between Baki and his father.

Baki Dou is post-confrontation: Every one of the major characters is bored, due to the unbelievable spectacle that was the father-son fight. There's a plateau that they've all reached, and there is really very little way of getting stronger beyond that point, nor is there any reason to do so - they already lack any real opposition. The benefactor of the strong realizes this and makes plans to create a new, absurdly strong threat to the characters.

Honestly Doppo's teachings limit him too much and keep him a solid upper mid tier fighter. He doesn't embrace negative emotions and respects his rivals as martial artists and human beings to fight dirty. But with the serial killer sequence you posted, he killed the guy in seconds using his skills because he didn't recognize him as a human being

He definitely does embrace negative emotions. He brutalizes the fuck out of Ali Jr. and Doyle, and he *tries* to kill Musashi. He may not have killed them in the first two, but he had reasons to not do so in both cases. I think when he addresses an issue as "serious enough" he treats it vastly differently and will use murder techniques, those occasions just don't jump out particularly often.
>>
>>136365302
Having murder techniques but not actually murdering anyone isn't the same as using them to kill
Motobe throws a smoke bomb and gets behind Baki with a dagger at his throat, but points out that just because this can kill someone, it's not the same because Motobe had no killing intent and it was just a demonstration

Without any >killing intent, the brutality he used in NGB were the same as his fighting in the arena, despite the emphasis on 'real fights' of NGB

I suppose you're right about the first two points, but he did actually try to kill Musashi - Musashi says as much. Maybe we're getting some new character development because of the boredom, could be neat.

I'm still curious about what exactly Shibukawa was doing to train. I'm certain part of it was psychological, training himself to be able to bypass the barriers, iirc he walks through a bunch of barriers in the Musashi fight, but sees an image of a massive volcano when Musashi goes all-out and says "Okaa-san" but that can't possibly be the entirety of what he did. Maybe he'll have hung out with Kaku and learned his weird nonsense techniques. Aikido + 4000 YEARS sounds pretty tough.

That aside, does anyone think they have a firm grasp of what Musashi's really like? He tends to fuck around because it's modern times and comedic, but his creepy eyes and arbitrary murder episodes make me think he's pure violence just like pre-Son of Ogre Yuujiro. He admitted to be taunting Doppo after he laughed at the God of War thing, so it's not really clear if he has a sense of humor or anything.

No. He beat Yuujiro at imagination-style fighting for a brief moment, making him realize that he didn't really want to be a "strongest creature". You need to read the manga series if you want to know any details about it,

>I read somewhere Yujiro recognized him as the strongest, doesn't that make things less fun?
Not in the slightest. He renounced his title so that he could become a "man" again, instead of a "creature" or "an unearthly being". Yuujiro is still the strongest by a significant margin. Musashi is close behind him, and we don't know where Baki is at all anymore because most of the other characters have been training extremely hard.

I think he did. You have to remember that Retsu and Katsumi both had their egos destroyed by their fights with Pickle. He acknowledged in the hospital that he really wasn't prepared to give up what he said. Retsu's fight with Musashi was him just trying to justify his extreme dedication to Chinese martial arts and trying to justify Chinese martial arts themselves. Musashi repeatedly provoked him by demeaning the arts (not following through on his swing so that Retsu could Xiao Lee, smashing the nine-section-whip, talking about how things are children's toys, etc).

He also was aware that he couldn't possibly counterattack in that same moment, though. I don't think anyone would be thinking clearly if they were amped up on adrenaline and then almost bifurcated, much less someone as calculating as Retsu.

>>136367269
Motobe never says that Musashi is stronger or weaker than Yuujiro - he just claims that the fight against Musashi is not Yuujiro's duty; that it is his own alone as the only person still cultivating "the art of war", and that he will protect Yuujiro from "the man called Musashi".

It's pretty clear from what we've seen combat-wise (and the fact that the two of them are completely chill with each other and go for drinks to hang out) that Yuujiro is stronger, but not by some massive margin. It's the kind of "Yuujiro wins 9/10 matches, but still loses one" type relationship.

Not the guy you were arguing with but you're making mountains out of molehills and your points aren't very strong and are mayne...they are pretty vague.

Anyway it was a good analogy. You're just being a butthurt...apparently nonamerican? Like that fucking matters? His point was the story of the dragonball series is so simplistic and each arc is so borderline episode that you can literally skip entire arcs and it doesn't matter. Hell, you can skip the entire first half of DBZ and pick up at Cell and probably not have too many problems.

He's not so much crazy as he is a lonely fighting history compiler who's out of touch with other people because of his unconscious isolationist behavior. He's awesome when he finds someone to whom he can relate somewhat.

He's playing head games. I think I remember Musashi being an irl internet troll in some novels.

He's trying his best to come off as a clown and experience as much "modern" martial arts as possible. He didn't even go all-out against Yujiro, funnily enough (no precognition).

We've been waiting so long for the fucking original baki chapters to be finally released, we might as well wait a little longer. Not like we're going anywhere.
