I am a fan of every form of the comedic arts and rokugo is no exception. I am laughing along with the stories as if I were in the audience myself.

I like it, but I think a contender for ANIME of the year must be strong in the ANIMATION department and rely heavily on it to tell it's story, it must be something that can't be done on any other medium.
In the case of this show, I might as well be watching a live action instead of anime, and that's why to me it can't be the AOTY regardless of how good it is in other aspects.

But it does, there's lots of character animation and camera movement during the rakugo scenes. I'd say often time these aspects make the scenes more entertaining than the stories themselves. I mean let's take last episode. It's not like the second story was a lot more interesting. It's just that the cinematography and visual direction was different. With the first we saw the character being tense, the audience impatient and we had the frames moving slowly. On the other hand with the send one the character animation was expressive, the audience was lively, the frames matched the transitions of the characters the guy was playing.
So yeah you're right which makes me think you're kind of full of shit. The story does utilize animation to tell its story.

Shinjuku Lucky Hole is a pretty good BL. Kumota Haruko is one of the better artists drawing BL, her art is good and her characters are great. She manages to write fun stories without endless forced drama (which plagues a huge amount of BL).

The scene in the first episode where the MC does his Rakugo set with the burglar was one of the best scenes I've seen in a while. It just just non-stop rakugo and actually made me appreciate rakugo a lot more, I was actually laughing as if I was in the audience.
I got high hopes for this series, probably AOTS. I'll have to see how Boku Dake and grimgar turn out too. Usually I'm a Kyoani dicksucker but Phantom World isn't really doing it for me.

For me, I feel like Rakugo itself is something hard to appreciate without prior knowledge and a live performance, and with animating it's even harder. While they did a good job, I feel like it simply doesn't translate well into anime. The VAs have held it up, and for that I'm somewhat interested, but the subtleness required to portray the different characters and mannerisms are impossible to appreciate in the animation. Even low-bitrate youtube videos of performances are easier to get into.

I agree with everything you say, by the way. Any time we experience foreign art we lose something, more or less. That said, any subtleties we lose in the language are made up for with great character and voice acting. I find it very easy to interpret what's going on. The script isn't bad either, I've laughed out loud at the funny parts which are hardly language-exclusive. Am I getting the "full experience"? Probably not, but what I'm getting is absolutely entertaining enough for me to keep praising the show.
