This was something you could have figured out from the start just like Illumi did. Alluka also was just introduced so this wasn't breaking any established rules.

If anything this is a good thing as Togashi could just as easily have written the exorcist to be able to heal Gon, the fact that he went out of his way to show it wasn't possible shows the whole thing was a way to introduce Nanika.

The problem is that Gon does not seek power in itself, power is just the means to achieve his goals as you said. Whether Gon will try to regain his Nen or not will depend on what he wants to do now that he's back to normal.
If he says he's had enough with finding his dad, he'll stay in Whale Island and live a normal life.
If he finds something else to do in the outside world,like his promised fight with Hisoka, he'll need strength to follow that path.
