I think they're more popular elsewhere because here (America anyways) space is at less of a premium so everyone has an actual oven instead of needing it a peripheral on a different more compact kitchen appliance. The bathroom actually wasn't that small. Compare the shower area to a typical stand-up enclosed shower in an American bathroom and it had maybe 4-5 times the floorspace. I could sit on the floor with my legs out straight. The bathtub was small, but it was deep enough that I could fully submerge myself in it, and I'm 5'11" and of average build.
