Can you even learn Japanese in a timely manner without anki? I seriously can't stick to it. I lose motivation for weeks at a time and don't study, and when I come back my anki is ruined.
>>
>>136295282

Sure, but if you have trouble memorizing stuff with anki you'll probably have trouble with it no matter what you do. If you have that much difficulty with finding motivation then maybe you should spend your time on something you care about more.

I love you Steve. Never leave us again.

It happens with all my hobbies. I phase in and out of them, and come back to them. Recently I've started reading a lot (English books), and am starting to get back into music more. I've just started wanting to read Japanese again so that's why I asked. I was keeping up with my anki for a while but it became really tedious when I couldn't be bothered.

I'm gonna need some way to take in all the new words. Anki will probably be the best way as there aren't as many alternatives that are as efficient that I can recall. I might just try and read for a while before getting back into it. I don't feel like reading manga, but LNs are kind of difficult. I'll see how I go with one again anyway.
>>
>>136295460
Just pick some easy LN then.

>>136295282

I'm getting about half way in the "optimized" Core 2k/6k deck and I'm noticing there's quite a few duplicates. Anyone know why that is? It's kind of annoying and I'm suspending them when I find them. I've seen at least 5. Sometimes they have a different audio clip and sentence but they're still the same exact word. One even didn't have a different clip and sentence, all the fields were exactly the same except for the index numbers.

Those more abstract words still refer to concrete concepts though, just because it's a more abstract concept like fate doesn't mean you can't still easily think of it on it's own and remember it, but adverbs don't really refer to anything on their own, their meanings only really makes sense when paired with other words

>>
>>136300431
I think your problem is not about things being abstract/concrete, but about things being easily to visualize or not. Have you tried visualizing a situation where the adverb applies and use it as a mnemonic? Like for 咄嗟に, the example sentence on the dictionary is「咄嗟にブレーキをふむ」. You could use that as a more concrete reference to remember the word by.
>>
>>136300640
Well yeah example sentences do help a lot, and I try to use them whenever I encounter a difficult word, but it's still harder to recall a word based on it's use in an example sentence than it is to just recall a word working on it's own

I'm not the guy that originally said he hated adverbs by the way so it's probably different for him, but personally I don't even really think adverbs being "abstract" or easy to visualise is the main reason why I can't remember them, that is an aspect, but I hate them because they're mostly always written in kana, and I have a lot of difficulty differentiating them from other similar kana words

Why do you ask for advice if you're going to throw counterarguments at it? Listen to the voice of experience for once. Adding one column every five minutes you can be done with hirgana in an hour plus another hour for kata. You don't have to do it all at once. Just spare five minutes here and five minutes there and you're good.
>>
>>136304584
Not that anon but it took me 2 hours for hiragana and about 4 for katakana.
There's a kana Anki deck in the Japanese learners zip file that will hold your hand through the process. But both shouldn't take you long.
>>
>>136304612
I'm a bit skeptical. I feel like i can do that in two days but i will forget everything on day 3. So i'm not sure if it's worth it, also

When you do vocab in Anki, which you should start after reading a bit of Tae Kim and kana, you'll see the kana EVERY card so they'll fast become solid in your memory.
>>
>>136304855
I've been at it for three years, I can read and watch most of the stuff I want, but more importantly, I've been here for three years and I've seen countless people go through the same process.

You won't forget anything because you'll constantly be using it for literally everything once you start studying. Also, nothing stops you from going back to realkana and working on them some more even after you've started anki and grammar.

Even as an intermediate I recommend J-E dictionaries, for the simple reason English definitions are a lot more concise. Like, for "whale" in Japanese you'd get a definition like "a very large marine mammal with a streamlined hairless body, a horizontal tail fin, and a blowhole on top of the head for breathing." which is a lot less useful than just "whale" in English.

Yes, because Core is just a slow vocab acquisiton (well, you can make it fast), whereas Genki 1 is primarily focused on grammar. If you wait to do Core all you'll be doing is slowing down your overall progress in the language for 0 benefit except satisfying your current... laziness? Or whatever it is.

You're going to be looking up words all the time no matter what at the beginning. You won’t be able to read LNs well until you've read a lot of LNs.
>>
>>136309628
It really depends on how you define "well".
I started at 2k and I was getting around with very heavy usage of rikai.

Anyone else have a hard time reading numbers in Japanese? Even if it's in the middle of text I just read it in English. I'm also procrastinating on sitting down and really trying to understand their way of expressing numbers what with 10,000 being its own "place".
>>
>>136311778
Fuck yes, no clue why it's so hard but yeah
>>
>>136311778

>>
>>136311778

When exactly does kaniwani start, you know, teaching me kanji?

>>
>>136311189
Woah that's a terrible accuracy on your mature cards. You should probably cut back on your new cards per day
>>
>>136311913

But you can also say "one thousand two hundred". Isn't there pretty much only one way to say numbers in Japanese?
>>
>>136312009
It's just because I had a lot of those rare vocab cards that you do like two or three times in anki and then dont see again for a month, usually it's more like 90%, it was yesterday at least

It's cause no context. Newfags always rush through a bunch of vocab early on because everything is distinct. Need context for that 何でも、なんやら なんなら shit.

I decided to sync Anki so I could use it on my phone but my decks have loads high resolution images attached to them and now It's uploading every single one.

This will literally take a day of uploading and I can't cancel it out without closing Anki. I can't use Anki anymore.

What now?

Anon. One day, someone will appear who will teach you.

But the sole objective of my current self is to liberate DJT. If you try to prevent that, even this thread will show you no mercy.

>Unlimited Methods Work

I had neither a tutor nor a class. All I have is this world. If a chosen method is a self-learner's symbol, then this world is my chosen method.

It copies and backs up any program or book that I have used.

That is my ability as a language learner.

Every Method Here Works.

Let me give you a pro tip son, this has come in handy more times than I can count
1) Install Share-X or whatever screenshot tool you want
2) When you see a word or kanji you don't know that stops your progress, press prt scrn and snip the word out
3) Keep reading, flow barely interrupted
4) Come to screenshot folder later and look up each word there
It's not perfect but for nukige it's invaluable
>>
>>136316453
Good question. I tried to type in some of the words but all that came up was the little short story, not the actual novel it was from.
