The good news is that thanks to the T-14 Armata, the Challenger 2s are going to get an LEP.
I doubt the smoothbore gun would be considered though. I've read up everything about it, goes down to cost (you guys will need to build an all-new tank around the gun), and that's the cost that people rather not spend.
Then again, an upgrade to the electronics would bring the tank up to standard. Much upgraded FCS + network-centric thingies would help quite a bit, and the bit about having found a company in Belgium to make new ammo just sweetens it.

That's really more supposition than a citation. I can find numerous examples of a side hit getting to the fuel tank or hitting ammunition, I can't find a single case of a round passing through the tank entirely.
