That being said, if we're talking about fanservice, removing it altogether to try and appeal to a wider audience is a risky move, and you'd piss off a lot of people who are the current source of income for studios. I don't think fanservice is necessary for anime to be good, but for some it's the only asset.
The best thing to make anime become mainstream is to produce shows without any weird things along with otaku-pandering ones, but even so, I doubt many people outside Japan would give a shit: how many non-american shows are as successful in the world as GoT or Breaking Bad? In comparison to american ones they're probably just a handful
And then, do we really want that? If this model is successful studios would probably start to adopt it exclusively, and I don't mind fanservice-filled shows or weird stuff once in a while.
